Heartwarming Scene: Newborn Calf Unable to Withstand Cold, Owner Brings It Home to Snuggle on Sofa with Kids
On January 30, 2026, a family in Kentucky, United States, faced extreme cold weather with temperatures dropping below freezing on their farm. They made an extraordinary decision to bring a newborn calf inside their home to help it survive the freezing conditions. The calf was born outdoors on Saturday in temperatures below 10 degrees Celsius. Macy Sorrell explained that her husband Tanner was checking on a pregnant cow when he found the newborn calf in a critically cold state. "It was like it was frozen, its umbilical cord was as hard as an ice cream stick - everything was completely stiff," Macy recalled from their home in Mount Sterling, Kentucky. Having previously lost a calf to cold exposure during a previous winter, the Sorrell family didn't hesitate to bring the tiny calf inside immediately. They carefully cleaned it and worked to warm its body. Macy noted that when they brought the calf inside, it was still covered in ice, with the placenta still attached. She carefully cleaned it and used a hair dryer to warm its body until its fur became fluffy again. Soon after, the newborn calf was resting on the sofa, curled up close to the family's two children, seeming like just another family member. The children naturally lay beside the calf, with their 3-year-old son Gregory naming the calf "Sally" after a character from his favorite movie, Cars. The Sorrells, who raise about 36 cattle, are accustomed to bringing farm animals inside when necessary. The next morning, Sally was safely returned to her mother, healthy and strong. The adorable sofa scene became a heartwarming story that went viral on social media. Source: The Associated Press (AP)
