Couple Buys 900-Year-Old Church, Discovers 83 Skeletons During Renovation
Lucy Thomas, 53, and Rhys Thomas, 45, purchased the St. Peter's Church in Peterston, Wenlloog, Wales, through an auction after being captivated by the historic building's charm. The church, originally built in 1142, was intended to be converted into their dream home. Initially warned they might find 5-6 buried bodies (a common practice for burying important people, wealthy individuals, or religious leaders), the couple was stunned when archaeological excavations revealed 83 complete skeletons underneath the floor. Initially distressed, Lucy explained that upon discovering many skeletons were buried together as family units - including couples and parents with children - they decided to respect the deceased. Instead of removing the remains, they redesigned their renovation to preserve the skeletons in their original location. They ultimately laid a new floor over the skeletal remains, installing an underfloor heating system. The renovation took over 4 years, with the first 18 months spent waiting for local authorities' permissions. The couple studied restoration techniques independently, learning from the internet and conservation groups. They preserved as many original church elements as possible while adding modern amenities like double-glazed windows, a pool table, piano, private bar, and a large hot tub. The transformed church is now a luxurious 6-bedroom, 6-bathroom home available for rent on Airbnb. Lucy concluded that despite being the most challenging project of their lives, they would make the same choice again if given the chance.
