Taiwanese Woman Installs Loudspeaker on Balcony to Verbally Abuse Neighbors at Night

A Taiwanese woman installed a speaker on her balcony and used a sound system to verbally abuse her neighbors for over two years, eventually being reported to the police and facing substantial penalties. In May 2023, Chen began using an amplification system to verbally attack several neighbors with whom she had disputes. The noise was so loud that it disturbed the peace of neighboring households, with her broadcasts consistently at maximum volume and lasting several dozen minutes each time. After nearly two years of enduring the situation and failing to negotiate with Chen, dozens of neighbors filed a complaint with local police. The case went to court, where Chen admitted to using the sound system to verbally abuse neighbors at night, claiming she only did so occasionally and because neighbors' noise prevented her from resting properly. The judge ruled that Chen's intentional and repeated use of amplification to broadcast offensive language at night was beyond socially acceptable limits. She was sentenced to 3 months in jail and fined 90,000 Taiwanese dollars (88,000 baht), with the option to appeal the decision.
