Free Ride for 8 Days! Two Singaporean Men Cross 2 Countries, Reaching Krabi Through the Kindness of Strangers
An extreme adventure! Two Singaporean men seeking to add excitement to their lives hitchhiked for 8 days, traveling across two countries to Krabi, spending absolutely no money through the kindness of strangers. Typically, traveling from Singapore to Krabi, Thailand takes only about 2 hours by plane and costs thousands to tens of thousands of baht. For these two Singaporean men, their journey cost nothing, trading time and 14 separate hitchhiking rides over 8 full days. Yi Hui, 27, and Jake, 28, documented their unconventional adventure through continuous video vlogs on Instagram. Their first clip captioned "Flying is sometimes too easy" showed them holding a cardboard sign, seeking rides from a gas station in Singapore towards the Woodlands immigration checkpoint. Despite initial doubts and suggestions to take a bus, a Malaysian driver ultimately picked them up and helped them cross the border. Yi Hui explained that after completing his master's degree, he wanted to "add color to life" by attempting this challenging 16-hour driving route. They prepared thoroughly, setting only one strict rule: no spending money on transportation. Though initially planning a 7-day journey, the trip ultimately took 8 days as they stopped in various towns and communities. Contrary to safety concerns, Yi Hui was most surprised by people's friendliness. Drivers were polite even when declining rides, and conversations during hitchhiking were deeper than typical ride-sharing experiences. Prioritizing safety, they carefully interviewed drivers, shared real-time locations with family, and used AirTags. Yi Hui noted, "Fortunately, every driver we met was kind and generous." After traversing highways, city roads, personal vehicles, and even truck beds, they finally reached Krabi's beaches. Yi Hui admitted arriving without spending a single dollar felt like a dream - a reward for their massive road adventure - creating memories and friendships that might inspire future journeys.
