Retired State Enterprise Employee Loses 3 Million Baht to Malaysian Man Posing as Police Officer
On February 6, 2024, Ms. Sudchit (name withheld), 63, reported to police at Sai Noi Police Station in Nonthaburi that she was scammed by criminals posing as government officials. The perpetrators claimed she was involved in a drug case and used threatening phone calls to manipulate her into withdrawing 3 million baht from her bank account over two days. The scammer, identified as Mr. Tanericzan Nizam, a 25-year-old Malaysian national, contacted Ms. Sudchit claiming to be a police officer investigating her alleged involvement in a drug trafficking network. He pressured her to withdraw cash multiple times, which she did out of fear. Eventually, with help from her village leader, she realized she was being scammed and worked with police to set a trap. Police successfully apprehended Tanericzan Nizam during a planned sting operation at a parking area near the Sai Noi District Office. Ms. Sudchit expressed deep regret over losing her retirement savings and hopes the money can be recovered.
