Tragic: Young Man Dies After Challenging Friend to Swim Across Canal While Drinking
A 25-year-old man tragically died after challenging his friends to swim across a canal while drinking. At 1:30 AM on February 12, 2024, Bang Phli Police were notified of a man drowning in the Suvarnabhumi Canal near the Lad Wai Canal water gate in Samut Prakan Province. Rescue teams from Por Tek Tung arrived and deployed divers to search for the victim. After about 20 minutes, they recovered the body from the bottom of the canal. The victim, Nattapon (last name withheld), 25, was with friends fishing and drinking since around 9-10 PM. After finishing their alcohol, he challenged his friends to swim across the canal. His friend Somsak, 29, accepted the challenge and also nearly drowned. Another friend, Narongsakdi, 31, tried to help but was unable to rescue the victim due to strong underwater currents. Police warned that the canal is approximately 80 meters wide and 5 meters deep, and people should not attempt to swim across, especially while intoxicated.
