Shanghai Rushes to Repair 'Massive Road Collapse' After Water Leak at Subway Construction Site
Channel News Asia reported on February 14 about the developments following a massive road collapse in Shanghai, eastern China, on Thursday, February 12. Shanghai Chengtie, the project manager for the Jiamin subway line construction, confirmed a water leak near the intersection of Qixin Road and Li'an Road on Wednesday evening. The Shentong Metro Group, which operates Shanghai's subway system, confirmed the ground subsidence at the construction site, which is now closed off along with surrounding sidewalks and areas. Workers told the People's Daily they are pumping water out of the hole and will quickly fill it with concrete. Reports indicate workers discovered the water leak during excavation on Wednesday evening. Despite attempts to seal the leak, the ground collapsed the next day, creating a massive sinkhole. Workers are currently constructing the new Qixin Road Station, which will connect the Minhang and Jiading districts in northern Shanghai. The station is part of the 44-kilometer Jiamin metro line, which began construction in mid-2021 and is scheduled for completion in 2570. Shanghai authorities reported no casualties or injuries, and have evacuated nearby office buildings and residential complexes.
