Chilling Experience: Screening Movies for Spirits Among 330 Graves
On February 17, 2569 (2026), the Phichit Samakkki Foundation organized an outdoor movie screening in a cemetery near Wat Mun Lek during the Chiu Yik day of the Chinese New Year festival. According to local belief, the gates of heaven and hell open, allowing ancestral spirits to receive merit from their descendants. The foundation has been hosting this unique event since 1967, screening movies for spirits buried in 330 graves. This year, being the 'Golden Horse Year', they will offer 100,000 firecrackers, believing it symbolizes high energy, rapid progress, and prosperity. Four movies were screened: two Thai films, one Chinese film, and one foreign film, creating an eerie atmosphere in the dark, quiet cemetery. The event is a long-standing tradition demonstrating respect and remembrance for Chinese-Thai ancestors.
