Taiwan Caregiver Secretly Marries 102-Year-Old Man, Allegedly Targeting Nearly 200 Million Baht in Assets
A scandalous case from Taiwan! A 68-year-old elderly caregiver is accused of secretly registering marriage with a 102-year-old man, with his family alleging her intent to acquire nearly 200 million baht in assets.
The family discovered the marriage when they noticed a new name in the 'Spouse' field on the elderly man's ID card. The caregiver, identified as Lai, had reportedly been caring for him for at least 17 years, possibly up to 27-30 years.
According to local media, the family claims Lai registered the marriage on January 5th without informing relatives. They were planning to visit the elderly man on January 8th but were shocked to learn of the marriage three days earlier, believing she intended to access his assets.
The family further alleges that Lai limited contact between the elderly man and his family, essentially confining him. In mid-January, they filed a complaint accusing her of coercion and questioning whether the elderly man was manipulated.
A dramatic confrontation occurred on February 3rd at a hospital, where the family attempted to take the 102-year-old man from Lai during a medical visit, resulting in a physical altercation that required police intervention.
The case centers on significant assets: the elderly man, surname Wang, reportedly accumulated property valued at approximately 780 million Taiwanese dollars (about 777 million baht). After the marriage, Lai allegedly gained control of seven properties and life insurance policies worth around 80 million Taiwanese dollars (79 million baht).
The sons claim a medical certificate indicates their father's significantly diminished mental capacity, and they plan to pursue legal action to nullify the marriage. Meanwhile, the local registry office confirmed Wang completed the marriage registration independently and answered all legal questions appropriately.
Lai has counter-sued the family for public defamation and requested protective orders. Ultimately, the legality of the marriage will be determined by the court.
