Warning: Blue Button Jellyfish Spotted Near Beaches in Similan Islands National Park
On February 23rd, Similan Islands National Park in Phang Nga announced a warning to tourists after discovering blue button jellyfish near coastal swimming areas, particularly on the eastern side (front beach) of Ko Si. The jellyfish are bright blue with a round button-like center and numerous tentacles, typically drifting with ocean currents and washing ashore. Although less dangerous than box jellyfish, they can cause immediate stinging pain, redness, swelling, itching, and clear blisters upon contact. First aid instructions include rinsing with seawater, avoiding freshwater immediately, and carefully removing tentacle fragments. The park has temporarily closed the eastern swimming zone until the situation is deemed safe, requesting tourists to immediately report any sightings and strictly follow staff instructions.
