KOH SAMUI — On Thursday, authorities raised red flags along major tourist beaches on Koh Samui due to strong winds and rough seas in the Gulf of Thailand, effectively banning swimming for safety reasons. Chaweng and Lamai beaches experienced waves measuring 1-2 metres, with forceful crashes creating long stretches of white foam. Lifeguards and hotel operators warned visitors to stay out of the water due to dangerous currents. Despite the rough weather, some tourists continued to relax on the beaches, using deck chairs and sitting under trees to enjoy the scenery. Beachfront businesses remained open under close monitoring. The Meteorological Department attributed the strong winds to a cold air mass spreading over the Gulf of Thailand, causing a convergence of easterly and southeasterly winds. Ferry services continued to operate normally, though small boat operators were advised to exercise caution. Strong winds and waves are expected to persist until February 20-21, with conditions likely to improve over the weekend.
