74-Billion-Baht Sea Bridge to Connect Samui Planned for 2029, Expected to Generate 400 Billion Baht in Economic Growth
The Expressway Authority of Thailand (EXAT) has completed final studies for a 74-billion-baht Samui Expressway project, which will create a 37.41-kilometer route connecting the mainland to Koh Samui via a 22-kilometer sea bridge. EXAT Governor Surachet Laophulsuk led the third public hearing at Surat Thani Rajabhat University's Samui Campus, presenting findings on engineering feasibility, economic potential, and environmental considerations. The four-lane expressway will feature a cable-stayed bridge over the Gulf of Thailand, with a 50-meter clearance for large vessel passage. The project aims to reduce travel time from two hours by ferry to approximately 20 minutes by road, operating continuously 24 hours a day. A survey indicated motorists would pay between 1,000-1,200 baht per trip, reflecting the anticipated convenience. The bridge will also integrate utility infrastructure for electricity, water, and telecommunications. Over a 30-year period, the project is projected to generate up to 400 billion baht in economic circulation through tourism, employment, and logistics. Motorcycles will be prohibited on the bridge due to safety concerns with strong sea winds. The project timeline expects cabinet approval by 2027, with construction potentially beginning in 2029 and operations commencing by late 2033.
