The event occurred on a Sunday morning when coastal guards from South End-on-Sea were notified about an incident on the Broomway, an ancient 10-kilometer footpath extending into the Thames estuary. The path, over 600 years old, is notorious for dangerous mud and rapidly changing water levels. The driver was attempting to reach Foulness Island but was misdirected by GPS into the Broomway area in Great Wakering, Essex, causing the van to quickly become stuck in mud and immobilized.
