Activist Files Complaint Against Bhumjaithai MP Over Party Donation
An activist has lodged a complaint with Thailand’s Election Commission alleging that Bhumjaithai MP Sukhada Sang Thaenthap made illegal donations to her own party. The complaint cites violations of the Political Parties Act and asks the EC to refer the case to the Constitutional Court, which could order the party’s dissolution if wrongdoing is proven.
Srisuwan Janya said the complaint follows former MP Sirichok Sopha of the Democrat Party calling for scrutiny of Sukhada Sang Thaenthap, who donated a total of 150,000 baht to the Bhumjaithai Party in installments on 9 February, 8 March, 19 April, 17 May 2022 and 27 February, 27 March, 27 April 2023, before she became a legislator. He also questioned the source of her and her husband’s assets, valued at nearly two billion baht. According to the Election Commission’s disclosed donation records, the contributions started at 10,000 baht per month and later increased to 30,000 baht per month after she entered parliament, while she reported an annual income of about 1.7 million baht. Her asset declaration shows holdings in the billions; the National Anti-Corruption Commission has announced it is conducting a thorough investigation into the origins of her wealth, income, and debt‑repayment capacity. Sections 72 and 74 of the Political Parties Act prohibit parties from accepting donations known or suspected to be illegally sourced or from foreigners; if a violation is confirmed, the Election Commission must submit the matter to the Constitutional Court under Section 92(3) and (4) to seek dissolution of the party. The Patriotic Organization urged the EC to act promptly to clear public suspicion.
