Thai Indigo Fabric Featured in Asian Games Uniforms
Thai indigo fabric and paste from Sakon Nakhon province will feature in uniforms for Thailand's 2026 Asian Games team, designed by Princess Sirivannavari to showcase traditional heritage and support local farmers and weavers globally.
The Department of Intellectual Property and Ministry of Commerce announced their pride in two geographical indication products from Sakon Nakhon province—indigo paste and natural indigo fabric—selected for inclusion in Thai team uniforms for the 2026 Asian Games in Nagoya, Japan. Designed by Princess Sirivannavari Nariratana, who serves as an athlete, designer, and ambassador for fashion and design at the World Intellectual Property Organization, the uniforms merge fashion, creativity, and intellectual property to increase product value, reach new consumer markets, and generate income for farmers, producers, weavers, and community entrepreneurs while showcasing Thai heritage on the global stage.
Sakon Nakhon's indigo paste, registered as a geographical indication on May 30, 2025, is produced from indigo plant varieties and benefits from the province's climate suitable for cultivation and fermentation, yielding high-quality indigo with deep blue color, natural aroma, and resistance to fading. The natural indigo fabric, registered since July 26, 2007, is cotton dyed with indigo using traditional knowledge passed down through generations, creating distinctive cloth ranging from light to deep blue with glossy finish, permanent color, and characteristic fragrance. These products represent not merely textiles but foundations for a diverse fashion and creative goods industry that creates economic opportunities throughout the supply chain from indigo farmers through to entrepreneurs developing value-added products, while inspiring younger generations to preserve and advance local wisdom.
