Bangkok Orders Three Officials Out For ID Card Fraud Scheme
Bangkok officials are being removed from duty for illegally issuing identity cards to ineligible foreign nationals' children. The crackdown has uncovered nearly 1,500 suspicious registrations across multiple districts.
Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt has issued an urgent order for three civil servants involved in an illegal identification card scheme to be removed from duty, effective August 18, 2026. The order comes as part of a crackdown operation called "Sweep the Middle of Bangkok" aimed at investigating and apprehending those responsible for issuing pink identity cards (Category 7 numbers) to foreign nationals' children without proper Thai citizenship eligibility.
Police General Adisorn Ngamjitsuuksri, an advisor to the Bangkok governor, announced the joint operation targeting the corruption network. Governor Chadchart has instructed the directors of Din Daeng and Lak Si districts to issue immediate orders for the three officials to step down, with the suspension taking effect from August 18, 2026. Simultaneously, the Bangkok administration has appointed a disciplinary investigation committee for all three officials, with the case proceeding in parallel with criminal prosecution by Din Daeng Police Station.
The administration has also ordered the Din Daeng district office to urgently review all residency transfers and public identity card applications, with special emphasis on records bearing numbers starting with 7. Initial reports indicate 47 rooms across Din Daeng apartments with foreign names listed at 16 or more addresses, including buildings in Pracharasongkhro Soi 1, 5, 6, 7, 11, and Mitmaitri Road, totaling approximately 1,468 individuals. District directors across all 50 districts have been instructed to strictly audit residency data, particularly cases showing unusual clusters of address transfers. The public is encouraged to report suspicious residency registration activity through the Traffy Fondue app, with informant identities kept confidential.
