Savings Group Leader Jailed for Embezzling 1.7 Million Baht

A court sentenced the chairman of a savings group to 18 months in prison after he misappropriated deposits from 170 members totaling more than 1.7 million baht and failed to repay them. The court also ordered asset seizure and sale to recover funds for the victims. Villagers expressed frustration about wanting their money back most of all.

On August 18, 2016, at Phitsanulok Provincial Court, 30 villagers from Ban Tha Chang, Thambon Tha Chang, Amphoe Phrom Phiram, Phitsanulok Province, attended the verdict after members of the Tha Chang Savings Group had their deposits misused by the group leader for personal expenses. Complaints had been filed continuously since 2020. The court ordered the defendant to compensate 1.7 million baht to 60 households totaling 170 people. Since the defendant had no funds to pay, the court sentenced him to 18 months imprisonment and ordered asset seizure and sale to repay the victims.

After the three village representatives finished hearing the verdict in court, they met with 30 waiting villagers by the Nan River in Phitsanulok, where residents expressed despair. Though the court ordered imprisonment for 18 months, what villagers wanted most was their stolen deposits returned.

Nai Theerawat Thin Thap, village headman of Moo 2, Tambon Tha Chang, revealed he came with about 30 affected villagers whose deposits were embezzled by the Tha Chang Savings Group chairman. They have struggled throughout this process and sympathize deeply with villagers unable to access their own money.

Nang Nam Fon, 67, one of the victims, stated that despite the court's imprisonment order and asset seizure for compensation, she felt deeply discouraged. As ordinary villagers, they had to follow procedures since 2020 when withdrawals stopped and complaints were filed with the Phrom Phiram District Development Office. After the group chairman admitted to using villagers' money for personal expenses and promised to repay, residents split into two groups—one that did not file charges and another that filed a criminal case. Following police investigation and prosecution, multiple settlement attempts occurred. The most recent mediation on July 16, 2019 showed the defendant still had no money, claiming land had not yet sold.

Today, August 18, 2019, the court scheduled another hearing where the defendant again had no money to repay, so the court ordered 18 months imprisonment and asset seizure for compensation. Some families whose deposits were stolen have already passed away, unable to withdraw funds for their children's education or to arrange funeral expenses for relatives. Though they struggled throughout and felt deeply discouraged, some could not withdraw funds.

Nang Om Fa, 68, stated she deposited a total of 267,000 baht and attempted multiple withdrawals but never succeeded even once. She sought to withdraw funds for her grandson's military officer examination but could not. Most painfully, when her mother died, she needed cash for funeral arrangements but could not withdraw money. When she learned the chairman had spent all the deposits on personal expenses, she joined others in filing a complaint at Phrom Phiram Police Station. Today the court sentenced him to prison and ordered full repayment.

On August 18, 2025, Paveena Hongskul, chair of the Paveena Hongskul Foundation for Children and Women, announced that the foundation had coordinated with Lieutenant Colonel Thawachai Norasinghe, superintendent of Phanom Thuan Police Station in Kanchanaburi, to arrest a 60-year-old grandfather who attempted to sexually assault his 17-year-old granddaughter. Police also recovered 60 methamphetamine pills from his home and are proceeding with legal action.

The case began when the mother, working in Chanthaburi, contacted the foundation for help. Her daughter had been living with the grandfather in Kanchanaburi and had experienced sexual abuse and attempted assault since age 13. The mother only learned of the situation early that morning when her daughter sent an audio recording of the grandfather's assault attempt from the previous night. The terrified teenager fled to a nearby temple, where monks and village elders provided protection and assistance.

Paveena Hongskul coordinated with village elders to take the girl to a safe house and immediately informed Lieutenant Colonel Thawachai, who deployed investigators. A search of the grandfather's home uncovered 60 methamphetamine pills. A urine test confirmed drug use, leading to charges for drug possession and use. The mother has scheduled a meeting with police at 9:00 a.m. on August 19 for questioning and to arrange a medical examination for her daughter, with professional team involvement before formal charges are filed for sexual abuse and attempted rape. Hongskul thanked police for their rapid response and said the foundation will continue supporting the girl in coordination with the Ministry of Social Development and the Department of Rights and Liberties under the Justice Ministry to pursue victim compensation.

Nine Drug Rehab Graduates Swear Off Addiction in Sacred Ceremony

Nine drug rehabilitation graduates took sacred vows at a temple in Nakhon Ratchasima after completing a 55-day recovery program, with officials emphasizing continued community support to prevent relapse.

Nine Drug Rehab Graduates Swear Off Addiction in Sacred Ceremony

On August 18, 2025, at Jang-In Temple in Muang District, Nakhon Ratchasima Province, District Officer Chinkorn Kaenkong, Deputy Officer Kittithad Fujitree, and Tambon Chief Sithiporn Bunyai led nine drug rehabilitation graduates through a formal pledge ceremony in which they vowed to sever ties with drug use. The participants received ritual water blessings, attended by family members providing moral support, before preparing to return to their families and communities.

All nine individuals completed their 55-day recovery program at the Nakhon Ratchasima Social Rehabilitation Center (CI Center) based on the university campus, where they were taught discipline, behavioral change, and structured daily routines including exercise, cleaning duties, meals, sports, and group activities. One 45-year-old participant, known as B, shared his experience: after an initial period of homesickness and discomfort in the first week, he adjusted once a structured routine was established. He reflected that during his 55 days in the center, he learned that drug addiction cannot solve life problems, and that his initial involvement stemmed from family troubles he mistakenly believed drugs could resolve—but instead they deepened his crisis and cost him relationships and family.

B committed to using this opportunity to start afresh and warned others still caught in drug use that substances only destroy health, finances, and families, urging them to open their hearts to treatment because recovery is always possible. Abbot Maha Tho of Jang-In Temple offered blessings and encouragement to the nine graduates, reminding them to hold fast to their pledges with strong resolve and view past mistakes as lessons, while emphasizing that although the past cannot be undone, everyone can choose to do their best in the present. He stressed that ending drug use marks the true beginning of a new life where families can be happy, children can have futures, and the graduates can rebuild careers and futures of their own.

District Officer Chinkorn explained that the CI Center serves as a vital mechanism to support graduates at risk of relapse, having provided care for more than 60 days through collaborative efforts of local administration, tambon chiefs, village elders, government agencies, and community members. The nine participants underwent formal evaluation across six categories and six measures before being deemed ready to return to their families and communities. He clarified that today's pledge and water blessing ceremony, while intended to bolster morale and provide psychological reinforcement, is not a scientific guarantee of sobriety but rather part of the motivational framework to help graduates honor their commitments. Following their departure from the center, graduates will receive ongoing monitoring and support.

In Nakhon Pathom province, a 60-year-old coconut tree standing 20 metres tall was snapped by strong winds and heavy rain, striking a 74-year-old woman with a fractured skull as she lay face-up on the ground. She died at the scene while gathering bird droppings fruit in an orchid garden on August 18. Samphran Police investigator Ransiman Senakham received the report of a fallen coconut tree killing a person in Village 4, Samphran subdistrict, Samphran district, Nakhon Pathom province.

After receiving the report, the investigator notified his superior and travelled to the scene along with the Poh Teck Tung Foundation. The incident occurred in an orchid garden. The body of Ms. So, 74 years old from Samphran subdistrict and owner of the garden, was found near the garden's edge. She wore a long-sleeved blue shirt and black three-quarter-length trousers, lying face-up with a fractured skull and scattered brain matter nearby.

Investigators found approximately 5 metres of the coconut tree's top lying beside the body. The tree's base section stood another 15 metres high, totalling 20 metres, with an estimated age of 60 years. The trunk showed signs of being fractured and broken.

When questioned, 78-year-old Somsak Prosombon, the deceased's brother, stated that before the incident the victim had gone out to collect bird droppings fruit growing beneath the coconut tree. At that time strong winds and rain had begun, causing the tree to break and fall. After the rain stopped he went to check and found the coconut tree had crushed his sister, who was already dead.

Police collected evidence from the scene and sent the body to Siriraj Hospital for further examination.

Khon Kaen Municipality Denies Land Tax Claims on Temple

Khon Kaen Municipality denies collecting land taxes from a temple property in Khon Kaen, saying the donated land qualifies as public property exempt from taxation since 1990.

Khon Kaen Municipality Denies Land Tax Claims on Temple
15h ago Khaosod

Khon Kaen Municipality has firmly denied allegations that it collected land taxes from Heiang Phimsiree, owner of title deed number 61945, who donated the land to build Pa Adulyaram temple. The municipality insists it has never sent any documents or taken action to collect taxes on the plot, as the land qualifies as public property exempt from taxation.

Mayor Prasit Thongtaangthai stated that according to the property deed number 61945 registered under Heiang Phimsiree's name, the land comprises approximately 21 rai, 3 ngan, and 61 square wah. Since 1990, its use has been designated as Pa Adulyaram temple for religious purposes, placing it outside the scope of local land tax collection.

Even after the Land and Building Tax Law changed in 2019, the municipality has not collected taxes from the landowner, as temple land is classified as public property exempt from such levies, despite the deed still bearing Heiang Phimsiree's name.

The mayor reiterated that the municipality has never sent letters or taken any action to collect taxes from Heiang Phimsiree's heirs. Only one separate plot under title deed number 10955—houses numbered 45/84 and 45/88—which is private property belonging to Phimsiree, Heiang's wife, had taxes collected.

When the municipality collects taxes and a property owner pays, a receipt must be issued. The mayor confirmed that allegations of tax collection from Heiang's heirs are false and invited anyone with doubts to present a tax payment receipt as evidence to dispute the claim.

Election Commission to Rule Individual Cases in Parliamentary Vote-Buying Scandal

The Election Commission will rule on 229 vote-buying suspects individually by August, likely resulting in mixed convictions and acquittals rather than wholesale charges, raising concerns about whether the broader conspiracy network will be

Election Commission to Rule Individual Cases in Parliamentary Vote-Buying Scandal
15h ago Khaosod

The parliamentary vote-buying case against 229 alleged suspects has reached a crucial turning point. Election Commission member Sittichote Intrawiseth stated that the investigation will focus on documented evidence and render decisions on an individual, per-charge basis, with conclusions expected by August.

This approach, while legally consistent with examining case-specific evidence, immediately raises a major political question: how will the broader conspiracy network be assessed? The Central Investigation Committee, comprising Election Commission and Department of Special Investigation officials, found the allegations against all 229 suspects to be substantiated. However, a separate subcommittee voted 5-2 to dismiss all charges—a stark contradiction.

When the Election Commission rules per-case and per-person, the likely outcome is neither wholesale convictions nor full acquittals, but rather partial guilt and partial exoneration, with only some cases advancing to the Supreme Court. The chances of prosecuting all 229 are virtually nonexistent, but dismissing all is equally unlikely if some individuals have sufficient corroborating evidence.

The critical factor is witness testimony. If allegations rest solely on witness accounts without supporting evidence, their evidentiary weight diminishes significantly. The Election Commission emphasizes that cases forwarded to court must be backed by sufficient evidence, not mere accusation, and that evidence must come from the official record alone.

This distinction is pivotal. If decisions are handed down per-person and per-charge without linking conduct to show the broader network, proving a coordinated conspiracy becomes far more difficult. This echoes concerns raised by analyst Prithat Watchrasindhul about the possibility of selective prosecution—penalizing lower-level operatives while allowing those closest to power to escape.

These remain observations, not conclusions, but they highlight the stakes. The vote-buying case is not merely about who faces conviction or acquittal; it must answer the public about how the parliamentary election system was manipulated, who executed the scheme, who ordered it, and who stood behind it. If only minor figures are convicted while major figures escape, the damage extends beyond 229 individuals to the credibility of the entire justice system.

Mother Appeals for Help Bringing Daughter's Body Home from South Korea

Mother Appeals for Help Bringing Daughter's Body Home from South Korea

The family of Piyavarn, known as Nong Pla, a 34-year-old woman from Kamphaeng Phet province, is appealing for assistance to bring her body back to Thailand after she died mysteriously while working as a traditional massage therapist in South Korea. Her mother, grieving and without financial means, is seeking public help to repatriate her daughter's remains.

Vinai Detsri, head of the Traitrueng subdistrict administration in Mueang district, Kamphaeng Phet, confirmed that local authorities have coordinated with the Deputy Prime Minister's office and the Thai embassy in South Korea to facilitate the repatriation. The embassy has requested the family authorize a friend already in South Korea to handle the discharge from the hospital and arrange the body's return, which will cost approximately 300,000 baht.

The family continues to face financial difficulties, as they are in poor economic circumstances. They are appealing to Thai society not to abandon them and to contribute donations, however modest, to help bring her home for merit-making purposes and to return her to her mother's embrace. As of August 18, 2569, donations totaling 40,000 baht have been received, but this remains insufficient. Additional support from relevant agencies and donors nationwide is needed. The hospital in South Korea will continue storing the body until the repatriation process is complete. If cremation must be performed in South Korea, it would cost approximately 100,000 baht. The deceased had been working as a traditional massage therapist in South Korea for over seven years.
