Election Fraud Case Decision Deadline Set for August or September
1d ago Khaosod

The case involving alleged fraud and electoral violations in the 2024 parliamentary election is intensifying as the Election Commission approaches its decision deadline of late August or early September 2026. Seven commissioners will jointly determine whether to refer charges to the Supreme Court's Election Division against all 229 accused persons or only some of them.

Election Commissioner Sitthichote Intrawiseth stated the commission has no concerns about the process, confirming it will base findings on evidence in the primary investigation report from committee 26, while also considering contrary opinions from subcommittee 36 that found insufficient grounds for prosecution. The commission is examining charges one by one, with the first charge requiring nearly a month of deliberation before moving through charges up to the seventh, the final set. Each accused person may face multiple distinct charges or only one, so the commission must carefully analyze the details of each charge before combining them into an overall assessment.

After completing deliberations on the final charge, commissioners will take a one-week break to individually review all evidence, reasoning, and counterarguments before reconvening to vote on individual cases, according to Sitthichote's explanation.

Meanwhile, opposition parties including the Pheu Thai Party, Prachachart Party, and Prachathipat Party are stepping up efforts in the final stretch, holding evidence and witness sessions every week. They have emphasized repeatedly that the Election Commission must refer the case only to the courts and not exercise arbitrary power. They warn that if the commission acts beyond its mandate, it risks being prosecuted itself. The fraud and electoral violation case is becoming increasingly tense, with all sides closely watching the commission's deliberations.

Why Your Nose Runs When You Eat: Doctor Explains Top Cause

Why Your Nose Runs When You Eat: Doctor Explains Top Cause
1d ago Khaosod

Have you ever wondered why most people's noses run almost every time they eat? Doctors say the most frequent cause is food-induced nasal inflammation, a form of non-allergic rhinitis that typically occurs during or before eating and becomes more common with age.

When we eat, the body triggers saliva production to aid digestion. In some people, this process may stimulate the nerves in the nasal area, causing the nasal lining to produce extra mucus and resulting in a clear nasal discharge while eating, particularly with spicy food. This condition differs from allergies because it usually lacks congestion, itching, sneezing, or eye itching.

Runny nose can also stem from allergic rhinitis or other non-allergic forms of nasal inflammation. If symptoms are frequent and disruptive to daily life, a doctor can investigate the cause and recommend appropriate treatment.

However, seek medical attention if you experience thick or discolored nasal discharge, chronic congestion, loss of smell, difficulty breathing through your nose, or bloody discharge. Pay special attention if clear fluid drains from only one side continuously in a faucet-like manner—though rare, this could indicate cerebrospinal fluid leakage, which requires urgent evaluation.

Editorial: Questions Arise Over Senior Civil Service Appointments
1d ago Khaosod

The Anuthins administration's appointment of senior civil servants is drawing scrutiny because many key positions go to officials with 5-10 years of remaining service. This means these appointees could outlast the government that appointed them.

The recent case of Piyapong Jiwatanakulpaisarn, director-general of the Department of Highways, nominated as Permanent Secretary of Transport, exemplifies this. At 50, he has nearly 10 years of service left, meaning he could serve multiple administrations.

Similarly, Rapipath Chanthasriworachai, approved as Permanent Secretary of Agriculture and Cooperatives, has about 7 years remaining, as does Piyasiri Wattanawarangkul, Permanent Secretary of Justice, who will retire in 2576.

When Anutin was Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister in 2567, he pushed to promote Arthit Samphantharat as Interior Permanent Secretary at just 53 years old.

While appointing officials with years remaining is not inherently wrong if they have knowledge, ability, and experience and undergo transparent selection processes prioritizing national interest, the government must explain its reasoning to the public. Selecting younger officials offers benefits, including long-term continuity and the ability to develop long-term strategies and solve problems without requiring reshuffles every time political leadership changes.

However, if these appointments are perceived as placing government loyalists in strategic state machinery positions for extended periods, the civil service's political neutrality could be questioned.

Every government has the right to nominate senior administrators it deems suitable, particularly during annual appointments and transfers. Whether appointees have one year or five to ten years of service remaining is immaterial.

The real issue is whether the government can explain its rationale. If selections are based on knowledge and ability, the country and people benefit. But if choices reflect political connections, society has the right to question whether the government is building a management team for continuity or orchestrating a long-term network to benefit the government itself.

Most importantly, all appointed civil servants at every level must serve the country and people with full commitment, proving they are genuinely qualified for their positions rather than advancing through connections or serving as political tools.

Hospital Defends No-Animal-Feeding Policy Over Disease Concerns

Vachira Hospital banned animal feeding on its grounds to prevent disease transmission and maintain sanitary conditions required under Thai health regulations.

Hospital Defends No-Animal-Feeding Policy Over Disease Concerns
1d ago Khaosod

Vachira Hospital has issued a statement clarifying its decision to post signs prohibiting feeding animals within the hospital grounds, citing concerns about disease transmission and compliance with public health law. The Faculty of Medicine at Navamindradhiraj University said the hospital must strictly adhere to medical regulations to ensure the facility remains clean, orderly, safe, and suitable for patient care. Feeding animals such as pigeons, dogs, and cats can lead to permanent animal populations and breeding, creating unsanitary conditions, odor problems, and potential disease breeding grounds. The no-animal-feeding signs seek public cooperation to prevent these problems and comply with the Hospital Act, Public Health Act, and the Sanitation and Order Act.

Police Nab BMW Driver Using Fake License Plates
1d ago Khaosod

On August 17, officers from the Highway Traffic Police Division 3 arrested Suphakorn (surname withheld), age 51, along with a white BMW X1 bearing forged license plate number 8gj 9XXX Bangkok. Police apprehended him on Highway 344 between kilometers 23–24 in the inbound direction toward Bangkok, in Nong Chak subdistrict, Ban Bueng district, Chon Buri province.

The arrest followed a complaint from an innocent victim who received a traffic citation despite driving a different vehicle brand. Investigation revealed that plate number 8gj 9XXX Bangkok had been fitted to a different car. Officers traced the vehicle to the white BMW X1 and found it traveling on Highway 344 in the Ban Bueng area. Upon inspection, the vehicle's chassis number showed it was registered as BMW X1 with genuine plate 9gb 7XXX Bangkok—not matching the attached plate. When checked, plate 8gj 9XXX actually belonged to an Isuzu D-Max pickup truck owned by someone else. The attached plate showed irregularities inconsistent with Land Transport Department standards, confirming it was counterfeit. Officers also discovered a forged tax sticker matching the BMW.

During interrogation, Suphakorn stated he purchased the BMW for 300,000 baht through Facebook, with the seller claiming it was a repossessed vehicle. He admitted initial suspicions about the price and plates but continued using the car until police arrested him. He faces charges of possessing and using forged government documents. The case has been handed to Ban Bueng Police Station for further legal proceedings.

Kraipit Premmani, Senior Executive Vice President of Lifestyle Business at PTT Oil and Retail (OR), officially launched Café Amazon's first store in Bangladesh in Dhaka in partnership with Bashundhara Group, one of the country's leading business conglomerates. Thailand's Ambassador to Bangladesh attended the opening ceremony. The expansion represents a significant milestone for OR as it grows Café Amazon beyond Thailand and taps into the large consumer market of South Asia.

The Bangladesh location was developed to reflect Café Amazon's brand identity through a "Lifestyle Oasis" concept—a relaxing space designed to offer respite from the hustle of daily life. The store combines the brand's signature green color with natural materials such as wood and brick, accented with white, cream, grey, and brown tones to create a warm, airy, and contemporary atmosphere.

Café Amazon has also tailored its menu to local tastes while showcasing Thai identity through special offerings. These include the Brown Sugar Peanut Frappe, which blends roasted peanut and brown sugar, and the Mango Sticky Rice Frappe, inspired by the internationally renowned Thai dessert. The chain uses mango, a popular fruit in Bangladesh, to bridge the culinary cultures of both nations.

The chain also introduced The Performance Series, beverages designed for health-conscious consumers and fitness enthusiasts. This line includes Choco Banana Build, Oat Matcha Boost, and Hazelnut Coffee Burst, which will be available exclusively at locations within fitness facilities, tailoring offerings to each target customer segment.

The Bangladesh entry results from a partnership combining OR's expertise in café operations and Café Amazon's brand strength with Bashundhara Group's deep understanding of the local consumer market and robust business network. This collaboration aims to develop sustainable long-term growth in Bangladesh, one of South Asia's most promising markets, and to create opportunities for Café Amazon's expansion into other international markets.

In 2025, OR plans to open eight Café Amazon locations across Bangladesh, including outlets at Bashundhara Head Office, Bashundhara City Shopping Complex, Gold's Gym, a golf driving range, Sports City, a trampoline park, and JCX. These diverse locations span high-potential areas aligned with varied lifestyle preferences, enabling the brand to reach more consumers and establish a growth foundation in Bangladesh.

Thai Public Broadcaster Auctions 50-Acre Bangkok Land for 9 Billion Baht

Thai Public Broadcaster Auctions 50-Acre Bangkok Land for 9 Billion Baht
1d ago Khaosod

Thai Public Broadcasting Service (MCOT) has launched a tender for long-term leasing rights on a 50-rai plot in the Ratchada–Rama IX district valued at approximately 9 billion baht, with bidding documents available from July 10 to August 26, 2025. Speaking at the launch, MCOT acting chief executive Yada Kasayapananth said the broadcaster is restructuring its business under the MCOT Next strategy, focusing on asset monetization to generate cash flow for operations and investment in new media ventures. Several large real estate companies listed on the stock exchange have already purchased bid documents, though MCOT declined to reveal their identities at this stage.

The 50-rai site is among MCOT's core assets, appraised at approximately 400,000 baht per square wah and valued overall at over 9 billion baht. Rather than selling the land outright, MCOT will lease it long-term to preserve the asset while generating stable future revenue. The location is a major strength—situated in Bangkok's prime business and residential district near Ratchadamri Road, adjacent to the Thailand Cultural Centre and Ministry of Culture to the north, with connections to both the Orange and Blue BTS Skytrain lines. MCOT has signed a memorandum of understanding with Bangkok Mass Transit System (BTS) to request use of BTS land for two 20-meter access points, plus additional access via an easement from the Ministry of Culture.

MCOT is inviting private developers to propose varied uses of the site without restricting to a single business type—options include large-scale projects, office buildings, shopping centers, hotels, or mixed-use developments suited to the location. The surrounding area supports diverse user groups including office workers, residents, tourists, and cultural event attendees, creating strong demand potential for multiple development models.

Bioengineered Gum Shows Promise Against Oral Cancer
1d ago Khaosod

Researchers have developed a bioengineered chewing gum that can eliminate three microorganisms linked to oral cancer, including HPV (Human Papillomavirus), the most common sexually transmitted infection. Laboratory tests showed the gum reduced HPV levels in saliva samples by up to 93%.

The research team is led by Henry Daniell, a professor at the School of Dental Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. The team aims to find antiviral proteins capable of targeting and destroying multiple virus types. Researchers discovered that hyacinth beans contain a protein called FRIL, which causes viruses to cluster together, preventing them from entering cells. The protein also inhibits viruses already inside cells and prevents further infection.

"We've identified at least five viruses in the mouth that we can inactivate," Daniell told The Post. He noted that the gum formula contains sufficient bean powder to effectively eliminate these viruses and has very low development costs. "That's probably the biggest advantage, because this product will have low production costs," he said.

The research team is currently awaiting FDA approval to proceed with the next phase of clinical trials, during which human participants will chew the gum directly. The trial will last four weeks, with participants chewing the gum three times daily. During this phase, the gum will be used as a complementary treatment alongside standard cancer treatments such as radiation therapy and surgery.

Daniell noted that in the future, this type of gum may be sold over-the-counter to the public without requiring a doctor's prescription.

Woman Dies After Motorcycle Cuts Off Pickup Truck on Chonburi Bypass

A woman on a motorcycle died instantly after cutting in front of a pickup truck on Chonburi's bypass on August 17; the truck driver could not brake in time to avoid the collision.

Woman Dies After Motorcycle Cuts Off Pickup Truck on Chonburi Bypass
1d ago Khaosod

A fatal collision occurred in Chonburi on August 17 when a motorcyclist switched from the rightmost lane directly into the leftmost lane, cutting in front of a pickup truck traveling straight ahead. The truck driver could not brake in time, resulting in a full-force collision that killed the motorcyclist at the scene on the Chonburi bypass.

Police from Muang Chonburi station and rescue volunteers from the Trikul Foundation were called to the elevated bridge area near Ban Bueng. Officers found a black Honda Scoopy motorcycle with license plate 3 Kho 2222 (Chonburi) overturned and severely damaged at the rear. A woman approximately 50 years old was found dead at the scene with no identification documents on her. Nearby, a white Isuzu D-Max pickup truck with license plate Yo 4539 (Chonburi) was parked with damage to its front bumper.

When questioned, the truck driver, Thira, 30 years old, stated he was driving normally in the second traffic lane when the motorcyclist suddenly swerved from the rightmost lane directly across his path in a tight cutting maneuver. Although he braked immediately, the impact was unavoidable, resulting in the motorcyclist's death.

Police plan to obtain additional footage from surveillance cameras at the scene and conduct a more detailed investigation of the truck driver to proceed with legal action. CCTV footage later captured the moment the motorcyclist cut sharply from the right lane into the left lane at the same instant the pickup truck was passing through on the Ban Bueng bridge approach, confirming the truck driver's account.

Thailand Launches Dugong Protection Plan After 209 Strandings

Thailand Launches Dugong Protection Plan After 209 Strandings
1d ago Khaosod

Thailand's Department of Marine and Coastal Resources (DMCR) has stepped up measures to protect dugongs after recording 209 strandings over the past decade, warning that the country's population could fall below 100 by 2030 if current losses continue.

DMCR Director-General Pinsak Suraswadi said the department is expanding its Save Our Dugong programme under Natural Resources and Environment Minister Suchart Chomklin's policy to protect rare and endangered marine species and reduce the impact of human activity on marine ecosystems.

The department has identified 12 high-risk areas across five Andaman coast provinces where dugongs face threats from boat strikes and fishing gear. Two urgent measures will be introduced, covering vessel routes and speeds as well as changes to fishing equipment.

Six areas have been identified as being at particular risk from boat collisions: Rassada Pier in Phuket, Bang Rong Pier in Phuket, the Koh Yao Noi–Koh Yao Yai channel in Phang Nga, the Nopparat Thara Beach Pier–Ao Nam Mao Pier route in Krabi, Pak Meng Pier–Koh Muk in Trang, and Koh Libong Pier–Hat Yao in Trang.

Buoys and other markers will be installed to define navigation routes, while speed limits will vary according to distance from shore. Boats travelling within one kilometre of the coast will be limited to 5 knots, within two kilometres to 10 knots and within three kilometres to 20 knots. Speeds will also be limited to 5 knots over seagrass beds and 3 knots over seagrass areas inside national parks.

Another six areas have been identified as being at risk from fishing gear: Koh Chang–Koh Phayam in Ranong, Koh Ra–Koh Phra Thong in Phang Nga, Pa Khlok–Tang Khen in Phuket, Nopparat Thara in Krabi, Koh Sriboya in Krabi, and Koh Muk–Koh Libong in Trang.

The department plans to modify fishing practices to reduce the risk of dugongs becoming entangled or injured. Single crab traps using one trap per buoy will not be allowed in seagrass areas, and buoy lines will be changed to 5mm braided rope to reduce the risk of entanglement.
