A 56-year-old woman died and two others were injured when a motorcycle she was riding on collided with a trailer truck and a private car at 1 p.m. on August 17, 2025, on Ratcharotchak Road near Thao Suranari Shrine in Samroong Klang subdistrict, Phra Pradaeng district, Samut Prakan province.

At the scene, police found a damaged black-and-blue Honda PCX motorcycle registered in Bangkok, a red Suzuki Swift with damage to the front bumper also registered in Bangkok, and a trailer truck registered in Rayong. The victim, Ms. Duan, 56, had asked to ride on the motorcycle to go to a nearby market located about 50 meters away but was struck before reaching it. One male and one female passenger were also injured. Rescue workers and paramedics provided assistance and transported the injured to nearby hospitals.

According to investigations, the woman had hitched a ride on the motorcycle to head to the market, which was only 50 meters from the collision point. A witness, 46-year-old Ms. Kanikar, reported hearing a crash sound and finding the victim lying on the road with the trailer truck's wheel pressing into her leg. She stated the motorcycle had emerged from a postal subdistrict soi and the victim appeared to have struck her leg upon falling before being struck by the trailer.

The trailer truck driver stated he was driving straight when he noticed the motorcycle emerging from the soi with a sedan parked nearby. He slowed down, thinking the motorcycle would stop, but it gradually moved to the left and suddenly cut in front of the trailer truck at very close range. He was unable to brake in time, resulting in the collision.

Police are currently investigating the scene, interviewing witnesses, and reviewing closed-circuit television footage to determine the exact sequence and cause of the accident before proceeding with legal action.

The Consumer Protection Commission has been ordered to investigate an airline that sold more tickets than available seats and offered only 1,500 baht compensation to a passenger who was denied boarding. Deputy Prime Minister Supamas Isarabhakdi, who oversees the commission, disclosed details of a complaint from a passenger who had booked a domestic flight in advance, selected a seat, and paid for in-flight meal service, but was denied boarding on the travel date and forced to buy another airline's ticket at personal expense.

Supamas revealed that the airline had taken 191 bookings for a flight with only 189 seats. The complainant checked in on time and was the last passenger, resulting in denial of boarding. The airline stated it had sought volunteers to give up their seats with no success and offered 1,500 baht compensation plus a meal coupon to rebook on another flight, which the passenger rejected and purchased an alternative ticket independently.

Supamas emphasized that an airline ticket is a contract between consumer and business. When a passenger pays, selects a seat, and covers additional service charges, they expect the agreed service—not additional expenses on travel day. She expressed concern that the passenger followed all procedures correctly but ultimately had to pay for a new ticket themselves. Seat management is the airline's responsibility to handle carefully; the risk should not fall solely on passengers.

While overbooking may be standard airline practice, the airline must address problems fairly, not simply pay compensation and leave passengers to solve the issue alone. The commission has been ordered to expand the investigation into contract terms, ancillary charges like seat selection and advance meal orders that consumers paid for but did not receive, and advertising that may mislead consumers into believing seats are confirmed. The commission will also study whether to designate airlines as regulated businesses under consumer protection law to establish fair standards for all parties.

Thailand's national boccia team is heading to Seoul, South Korea to compete in the World Boccia Championships 2026 from August 24 to September 4, 2025. The Thai squad will face elite boccia athletes from around the globe while targeting an important milestone before the Asian Para Games 2026 in Nagoya, Japan later in the year.

The world championship serves as a critical test for Thai boccia on the global stage. The team will compete across multiple classifications with experienced and internationally accomplished athletes, including BC1 Visnu Houtpradit, BC2 Vorawut Sangampha, Phakaphum Linchoom, and Sattanan Brahmasiri, BC3 Jarunsak Chamdaeng and Ludamani Khlahauy, plus BC4 Pornchai Labhyen and Nualchan Phon.

According to World Boccia rankings as of August 1, 2025, Vorawut Sangampha holds the highest ranking among Thai athletes at fifth globally in BC2. Ludamani Khlahauy ranks 16th globally, Pornchai Labhyen 20th, and Nualchan Phon 21st in BC4, while Visnu Houtpradit ranks 22nd, Sattanan Brahmasiri 29th, and Phakaphum Linchoom 31st.

Competition will be intense as Thailand faces leading boccia nations including Brazil, Portugal, and England, all with world-class athletes and extensive international experience. The Thai team has set a target of winning one gold medal, requiring careful preparation of tactics, precision, and mental control in each match.

Key events include BC2 Men with Vorawut Sangampha and BC4 Men with Pornchai Labhyen, as well as the team event featuring Visnu Houtpradit, Phakaphum Linchoom, and Sattanan Brahmasiri as core members. Thai Railways is moving forward with the government's plan to study a double-track railway project connecting Hat Yai to Sungai Kolok in Malaysia, aimed at improving quality of life in four southern border provinces. On August 17, a meeting was held at BP Samila & Resort Hotel in Songkhla, chaired by Sangkhom Goed-Ko, Songkhla Deputy Governor. Thai Railways Governor Anant Pothnim reported the feasibility study findings via video conference, covering economic, engineering, and environmental aspects of the project, which spans approximately 215 kilometers with 26 stations and 8 stop points.

The project aims to develop the rail network, boost transport capacity and economic competitiveness, and raise living standards in Songkhla, Pattani, Yala, and Narathiwat provinces. It is designed to connect with existing rail routes from Surat Thani to Hat Yai and from Hat Yai to Padang Besar, with future plans to link Thailand's rail network directly to Malaysia's federal railway network. This expansion is expected to enhance freight and passenger transport, strengthen trade, investment, and tourism sectors, and create employment and development opportunities along the rail corridor and surrounding areas.

The Hat Yai–Sungai Kolok project will begin at Hat Yai Junction and extend through Pattani, Yala, and Narathiwat, connecting with Malaysia's federal railway network. The initiative aligns with national strategy, government policy, and the national economic and social development plan, promising to improve transport efficiency, strengthen economic competitiveness, and boost trade, investment, and tourism capacity.

Lawmaker Rakchonok Srinork, known as Ice from the Pheu Thai Party, arrived at Thonglor Police Station at 5 p.m. on August 17 in response to a summons. The case was filed by Suchat Chomklin, who accused her of spreading false information via computer systems that could cause public alarm and defamation through advertisements.

Suchat's legal team appeared at the station and stated they would not negotiate or mediate, and would pursue the case through full legal proceedings. They argued that Ice's social media posts accusing Suchat of corruption and bribery do not constitute legitimate criticism but rather constitute accusations and defamation. The legal team also indicated they would file a complaint with the National Anti-Corruption Commission alleging serious violations of ethical standards.

After meeting with investigators for approximately 30 minutes, Ice underwent fingerprinting before the assembled media. She denied all charges and stressed that politicians and state officials must allow the public and media to criticize them directly or indirectly. She stated that if officials cannot tolerate criticism, they should resign and pursue other careers. Ice confirmed she is prepared to fight the case through the justice system and will submit a written statement.

Ice also discussed the investigation into the Thai Digital Passport project, noting that the Digital Economy and Society Ministry's Permanent Secretary and Inspector-General had not appeared in person before the committee but instead delegated representatives who could not answer questions. She criticized this lack of accountability from senior officials and stated she would file complaints with the National Anti-Corruption Commission and the Central Investigation Bureau if and when the project launches for public registration.

Suvarnabhumi Airport plans to expand its automated passport control, or Auto Gate, system to travelers from 31 additional nationalities by the end of August, as the government moves to ease congestion at Thailand's main international gateway.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Commerce Suphajee Suthumpun and officials from the Tourism and Sports and Transport ministries inspected Suvarnabhumi Airport on Monday to discuss measures to improve the arrival experience and tackle overcrowding.

The airport sees around 190,000 passengers a day during the peak travel season and 140,000-150,000 during the low season. International arrivals account for about 70,000 passengers a day.

The busiest period is between 1 p.m. and 5 p.m., when as many as 5,000-6,000 passengers per hour can enter immigration areas, putting pressure on immigration counters, staff and available space.

As an immediate measure, Suvarnabhumi and the Immigration Bureau will improve the use of all three immigration zones by directing passengers toward less crowded areas, opening a central hall to help disperse crowds and deploying additional officers during peak flight periods.

The Immigration Bureau has approved in principle an expansion of Auto Gate eligibility to 31 additional nationalities. The measure is currently awaiting final signatures and is expected to take effect by the end of August.

The nationalities were selected based on immigration rejection statistics, the Henley Passport Index and national security considerations.

The expansion is expected to add around 6.5 million potential Auto Gate users, along with another 900,000 long-term visa holders.

Once the system is operating at full capacity, officials expect 53% of arriving passengers to be able to use Auto Gates, while the remaining 47% will go through immigration officers.

The rollout will be phased according to system readiness and the availability of biometric data. Travelers who have previously entered Thailand and already have biometric information in the system will be able to use the gates first, while first-time visitors will still need to have their biometric data collected.

The government said improving the immigration process is part of a broader effort to strengthen Thailand's tourism infrastructure, with the arrival experience at the airport seen as the first link in a wider tourism chain covering airlines, transport, hotels, restaurants, retail and other services.
