A gas explosion at the Liushenyu coal mine in Shanxi province in northern China killed at least eight workers and left 38 others trapped underground, according to state news agency Xinhua reported on May 23. The blast occurred around 7:30pm on May 22. Of 247 workers underground at the time, 201 were safely brought to the surface by 6am on May 23, while eight have been confirmed dead and 38 remain missing. President Xi Jinping has called for all-out efforts to treat the injured and ordered a thorough investigation into the accident. He emphasized that all regions and departments must learn from this disaster, maintain constant vigilance over workplace safety, and take decisive measures to prevent future catastrophic accidents.
