Department of Fisheries Confirms Mislabeled Canned Fish is Tilapia, Not Mackerel
Tilapia was found in canned fish labeled as mackerel from a Samut Sakhon manufacturer, which has admitted the mislabeling and faces legal charges for producing counterfeit food products.
The Department of Fisheries confirmed that testing of canned fish from Samut Sakhon Province found tilapia rather than mackerel as stated on the label. The manufacturer has admitted the error and faces legal violations.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) inspected a canned fish manufacturer in Samut Sakhon Province on May 5, 2025, following reports that tilapia was being substituted for mackerel contrary to label claims.
Thitiporn Laowprasert, Director-General of the Department of Fisheries, revealed that the FDA submitted samples for scientific testing by his department. Results confirmed the fish was tilapia, not mackerel as had been circulated on social media.
The manufacturer has acknowledged the error and faces charges under the Food Act B.E. 2522 for producing counterfeit food products.
