IP Department Warns AI-Generated Music May Violate Copyright

IP Department Warns AI-Generated Music May Violate Copyright
5d ago Khaosod

Thailand's Department of Intellectual Property has cautioned the public about using artificial intelligence to create music without obtaining permission from original copyright holders. The department noted that generative AI technology is now widely used to create and distribute music online through voice conversion, remixes, and new compositions based on existing songs. Since current copyright law does not specifically address AI-generated works and no court precedent exists on the matter, the department has issued guidance to clarify copyright principles and protect creators and rights holders from infringement.

According to the department's director, using an original copyrighted song with AI to change a vocalist, remix, or create new music while retaining key elements such as lyrics, melody, or musical composition—such that the connection to the original work is recognizable—may constitute copyright infringement or unauthorized adaptation. Because AI systems may need to copy or process music files during operation, unauthorized use without the copyright holder's permission could violate the law unless it falls within legal exceptions such as non-commercial research or study.

However, songs that have entered the public domain after their copyright protection expires may generally be used as data or a template for creating new works with AI without infringing copyright. Users must still respect other protected rights, such as those in sound recordings, performances, or derivative works that may still be under protection. The department advised creators and AI users to verify copyright status and obtain permission from all relevant rights holders before using others' works. A single song may involve multiple rights holders including lyricists, composers, arrangers, sound recording producers, and performers. Those who fail to secure proper authorization risk legal disputes and should consult the department or seek legal advice before proceeding.

Buddhist Abbot Opens Up on Land Dispute Frustrations

A Buddhist abbot in Khon Kaen Province expressed frustration over a decades-long land dispute, saying age has discouraged him though he maintains the temple will ultimately own the property after Supreme Court proceedings conclude.

Buddhist Abbot Opens Up on Land Dispute Frustrations
5d ago Khaosod

At 10 a.m. on August 13, 2026, reporters visited Wat Pa Adulyaram in Muang District, Khon Kaen Province, to follow up on the land dispute between the temple and the heirs of the original landowner. The atmosphere was normal, with monks continuing their daily religious duties and villagers making alms offerings as usual.

Abbot Phra Kru Adulphon Nithes of Wat Pa Adulyaram stated that as a monk, he felt it inappropriate to personally pursue legal action against lay people. He has served as abbot for 36 years without concern, and while the legal proceedings initially did not burden him, age has brought some discouragement. "Please do not worry or be stressed," he said in a message to supporters. "The land remains the temple's property after all court proceedings. I thank everyone for their support, and ask that their faith be returned to bring them happiness."

Khon Kaen Governor Khachon Rietkhanitpanit revealed that a request to issue a certificate of temple land ownership is still pending final processing. The matter dates back to 1993 when a donor contributed the land to the temple, but it was never officially registered. The case has already been decided by the lower and appellate courts, with only the Supreme Court stage remaining. "I urge both the temple and the heirs to wait for the Supreme Court's decision," the governor said. "If we make our own determinations, we may act unlawfully. The donor clearly wished the land to benefit the temple, so we should let the court decide. When land registration requests are filed, there is a 30-day period for anyone with claims to object. If no objections are raised, the process continues; if valid claims emerge, legal steps must follow."

The governor added that police have been deployed to maintain order and prevent conflict, and provincial officials have been sent to speak with residents. He noted that while the legal proceedings are complete, the registration step remains unfinished, citing the analogy of a will that must still be proven in court even after the testator's death.

Doctor Debunks Myth That Rainwater Causes Colds in Children

A doctor debunks the widespread Thai myth that rainwater causes colds in children, explaining that cold temperatures weaken immune defenses and allow viruses to spread, not the water itself.

Doctor Debunks Myth That Rainwater Causes Colds in Children
5d ago Khaosod

On August 13, obstetrician and gynecologist Nopmesat Sricharusitthikul, known as Doctor Yeen, posted on Facebook through the page "Birth with Doctor Yeen" asking: "Rainwater doesn't contain cold viruses... so why do children always get sick when they get rained on?"

Doctor Nopmesat clarified: "Mothers, raindrops don't contain cold viruses and raindrops don't harm your child." He notes this is one of the biggest misconceptions in Thai society, passed down through generations, making many parents feel guilty when their children get wet in rain.

Medically, rainwater is pure H₂O falling from the sky, though it may contain dust particles, but it contains no "cold or flu viruses." The reason children often become ill after getting rained on is not the water itself, but what happens to the body when exposed to cold. When raindrops hit a child's skin and head, surface temperature drops rapidly, triggering the body's automatic response: vasoconstriction of blood vessels. Blood vessels in the respiratory tract, nasal mucosa, and throat constrict, reducing the circulation of white blood cells and immune defense. In simple terms, the child's respiratory defense weakens temporarily.

Conciding with rainy season, the air has high humidity and cooler temperatures—ideal conditions for rhinovirus and RSV to thrive and spread. When children's immune defenses weaken, they breathe in virus-laden air, allowing viruses to establish and multiply easily.

In summary, rainwater doesn't cause colds, but the cold from rain weakens the child's first line of immune defense, giving viruses an opportunity to attack.

The doctor does not recommend letting children play in heavy rain, as they risk hypothermia and rainwater in cities may contain irritants that affect eyes and skin.

If your child accidentally gets caught in the rain, parents should not scold or feel guilty. Instead, take these three immediate steps:

1. Dry the body and hair thoroughly: This restores warmth to the head and body, allowing blood vessels to expand and resume normal circulation of white blood cells. 2. Change into dry, warm clothes: Avoid letting wet clothes cling to the skin for long periods. 3. Give warm water to drink: This helps regulate temperature in the throat area and moisturize the respiratory tract lining.

Modern parenting requires understanding the science behind illness. If your child develops high fever, lethargy, difficulty breathing, or refuses to feed, seek medical attention promptly, as it may be more than a common cold.

Country music singer Sunary Ratchasima underwent emergency surgery after being hospitalized with severe abdominal pain that forced her to cancel a concert. Doctors discovered a 3-centimeter mass obstructing her colon, took tissue samples for testing, and performed surgery that went successfully. She has since been discharged from the ICU.

Sunary revealed that the blockage was partly due to her demanding work schedule, during which she would avoid bathroom breaks out of concern for productivity. She also drank very little water and acknowledged that eating large amounts of vegetables while staying dehydrated may have contributed to the obstruction.

In a touching moment that moved many, her two sons Hero and Arthur visited her bedside accompanied by their father and grandfather Tanumarn Angkinanthn, who came to offer support after she left the ICU. Sunary posted a photo of the visit with a message: "Mom is out of the ICU and doing well and safe. Thank you to the fathers of Hero and Arthur for coming to visit and encourage me." The scene highlighted the enduring bonds of family care, even as relationships and circumstances change.

Police Deputy Commander Major General Surapong Thanomjit announced on August 13 that following an initial complaint, Police Lieutenant Thanongsak Sawatdigomol, Deputy Chief of Bang Hang Police Station in Nakhon Si Thammarat, filed a report of assault. The case has been assigned to Deputy Commander Pornchai Kanjorklin of Nakhon Si Thammarat Provincial Police, along with Region 8 Provincial Police Command investigators, who have already gathered evidence and interviewed witnesses at the incident location in Hua Khuan Village, Pariik Subdistrict, Thung Yai District, Nakhon Si Thammarat.

The incident occurred at 11:30 p.m. during a Buddhist merit-making ceremony for the mother of the Pariik Subdistrict Mayor. After the service ended, an argument broke out between Police Lieutenant Thanongsak and Chaichangwit Detchdetcho, a Member of Parliament and deputy leader of the Democrat Party, which escalated into a physical altercation involving a punch to the ear.

Police will call additional witnesses and summon Chaichangwit Detchdetcho for formal questioning. Investigators will examine all aspects of the incident, including whether the injured officer was dragged away from the scene. The commander emphasized that all persons involved will face prosecution regardless of rank, status, or political position, as everyone must be subject to the same law. He noted that such conduct is considered an affront to police honour and cited that Chaichangwit has faced prosecution and court judgement previously.

PM Orders Interior and Police to Partner on Crime Control

Prime Minister Anuthin Charnvirakul has directed the Interior Ministry and Royal Thai Police to operate as a unified partnership using integrated data systems to combat crime. He has mandated the establishment of weapons screening checkpoints and instructed officials to maintain strict protocols, reject outside interference, and disregard requests for favors, stating that genuine government officials would never make such calls.

At 9 a.m. on August 13, 2025, at the Challenger Impact building in Muang Thonburi, the PM and Interior Minister launched a practical workshop on implementing security operations under government policy at the provincial level, with participation from Interior Ministry permanent secretaries, provincial governors, district officers, and Royal Thai Police commanders from Regions 1, 2, and 7.

The PM outlined nine priority cooperation areas stemming from workshops conducted over the previous two months: land encroachment, cybercrime, nominee issues, money laundering, influential criminals, informal debt relief, tourist safety, database connectivity, and drug suppression and prevention.

The PM emphasized that these issues are well-known and that proper management would bring peace, security, and improved quality of life. He stressed that security threats take multiple forms across family, community, and national levels, with criminals operating through complex networks. He expressed confidence that close coordination between governors and police commanders, district officers and officials, and local administration staff would address fundamental security and peace concerns.

The PM highlighted the importance of provincial administration and police working as a single team, describing them as "twin pairs" essential to national security. He called for the use of unified data systems, or One Data, to ensure consistent information, efficient operations, and proactive problem prevention within a 90-day timeframe.

On weapons control, the PM noted that strict measures are currently in place. The Interior Ministry's Department of Local Administration has halted issuance of Category 3 firearms permits for ordinary citizens, and Category 12 permits have not been issued for three years. The PM directed intensified enforcement to prevent copycat behavior and undesirable incidents.
