Buddhist Official Seeks Provincial Help in Temple Land Dispute
A Buddhist official requested provincial protection for clergy and expedited land title transfer at a Khon Kaen temple embroiled in a dispute with heirs of the original landowner over donated property.
On August 17, Professor Thongthong Chantharangsu, chairman of Sukhothai Thammathirat Open University Council and head of the National Buddhist Protection Committee, met with Khon Kaen Governor Kachaikit Rukphanichakun to submit a request for security protection of the clergy and to expedite the change of land title ownership at Wat Pa Adulyaram in Muang District, Khon Kaen. The dispute arose after heirs of the original landowner, from whom Hiang Pimsat made a donation to the temple, are now claiming ownership rights. The governor stated that Khon Kaen Province has taken the matter seriously and assigned relevant units to investigate the facts. He asked the public to refrain from commentary and noted that the temple has submitted evidence to the Khon Kaen Land Office, which is currently reviewing the case and will proceed according to legal procedures. Any objections will follow proper legal channels.
Professor Thongthong said he visited Nong Waeng Royal Monastery to meet the Khon Kaen Provincial Buddhist Committee and inquire about the situation, noting that local religious officials are overseeing the matter. His meeting with the governor was to express gratitude for the province's support and protection of the temple and Venerable Phra Kru Adulasat Nidet, the abbot. The professor emphasized that the request for security concerns protecting the temple grounds from any violent incidents. The land title transfer from Hiang to Wat Pa Adulyaram is in the hands of the Khon Kaen Land Office, where the governor will authorize and expedite the process according to Department of Lands regulations.
Professor Thongthong stated he and the National Buddhist Office will continue to monitor the temple's situation and work with the provincial Buddhist committee. He expressed no concern about the heir's reclaim, as these matters fall under the jurisdiction of the land office to handle through legal procedures.
