1d ago Khaosod

At 10 a.m. on May 19, 2025, local residents reported that a young naval officer sought help after being scammed and abandoned with no money to return to his Bangkok base. The 23-year-old sailor, identified as Petty Officer A, had connected with a woman identified as Ms. N through Instagram just three days prior. She messaged him proposing a meetup in Chachoengsao and claimed she would pay for a ride-sharing service. They met around 11 p.m. on May 18 near a roadside pavilion at the Bypass intersection in Panasnikhom, Na Pla subdistrict, Muang district, Chachoengsao province. When she suggested going out, he told her he had no money, saying he only brought "his body and heart." She then asked him to wait while she went to withdraw cash from an ATM on her motorcycle—and never returned. After waiting until dawn with no sign of her, the sailor realized he'd been duped and approached nearby residents for help. A good Samaritan assisted him by purchasing a minivan ticket at the Chalom Thai intersection and providing travel money back to Bangkok. The sailor issued a warning to other young men not to trust beautiful women online, as they may face similar situations.

Sodor Style, whose real name is Pimlada Wawtaisong, has issued a public apology after posting controversial questions about sexual assault that triggered heavy criticism online. Her original post had questioned certain aspects of assault cases in a way many found insensitive and inappropriate.

In her apology, Sodor Style expressed genuine remorse, saying: "I sincerely apologize for the previous post. When I posted it, I didn't think carefully enough and didn't realize how much my words could hurt so many people's feelings."

She continued: "After reading news related to this topic recently and reviewing my own post, I realized it wasn't what I actually intended to communicate. I felt terrible because it's a sensitive subject that shouldn't be discussed for any reason whatsoever."

Sodor Style emphasized her support for survivors, stating: "Especially to those who have had experiences with such terrible situations, I'm sorry for making you feel worse or uncomfortable. I now understand that some words, even without bad intentions, can genuinely hurt others' feelings."

She also mentioned consulting with a friend knowledgeable about law and who had personal experience with such trauma, gaining deeper understanding of the psychological impact and emotional scars survivors endure. "I have no excuses," she said, noting she has already deleted the problematic post.

Sodor Style reaffirmed her commitment to supporting survivors and pledged to become an advocate for sexual harassment awareness: "I'm willing to be a voice about Sexual Harassment and will study this more thoroughly. I will stand by all who have been harmed. Thank you to everyone who reminded me and made me reflect on myself again. I sincerely apologize and hope to prove through my actions that I have learned from this mistake."

In a follow-up post, Sodor Style clarified her position by sharing a previous supportive post she made about Tray Scott five days earlier, emphasizing: "Why try to find fault? Check the date of the post—I shared it five days ago to show whose side I've been on. What reason would someone like me have to victim-blame?"

Parliament Administration Committee Cancels Pay Raise for MP and Senator Assistants, Orders Review Committee to Study Staffing Structure Within 90 Days

Thailand's parliament has canceled a planned pay raise for MP and Senator assistants, citing economic concerns, and ordered a 90-day review of whether such positions are necessary at all.

1d ago Khaosod

On May 19, 2569, Parliament President Sophon Saram announced the decision regarding benefits and appointments of MP and Senator assistants. He explained that the previous parliament president had approved a pay increase, but the current administration believes implementing it during the ongoing economic situation is inappropriate. The Parliament Administration Committee held its first formal meeting and voted to cancel the raise and maintain the existing compensation structure.

Regarding public discussion about eliminating parliamentary assistant positions entirely, Sophon said he has established a committee to clarify whether such positions are necessary and at what compensation levels. The committee, chaired by Police General Prasit Tham Dee, will include experts from both the House and Senate, budget office officials, civil service commission representatives, legal department representatives, and external credible figures. The committee will deliberately exclude sitting MPs and Senators to avoid conflicts of interest.

The committee has been given 90 days to complete the study, ideally finishing by October, though faster completion is welcome if data is comprehensive. Sophon stated that the legislature will address any obstacles to parliamentary operations and implement necessary changes. When asked how the committee should proceed if findings recommend reducing assistant numbers, Sophon said policy has been set to follow whatever the study concludes, provided the data is complete. He noted that parliament regulations can be changed by the president according to national circumstances, and that nothing is immutable.

Four victims have been identified from a train-bus collision at Bangkok's Makkasan railway crossing, with authorities seeking DNA samples from relatives of four additional remains to complete identifications.

1d ago Khaosod

On May 19, 2025, at the Police Hospital Institute of Forensic Medicine, Pol. Col. Virul Suphasing Siripricha, director of the institute, announced progress in identifying victims from the Route 206 bus-train collision that occurred at the Makkasan railway crossing with Asoke-Din Daeng Road. Four victims have been successfully identified and their names forwarded to Makkasan Police Station for coordination with families. So far, seven of eight families have provided DNA samples, though officials cannot yet confirm complete matches. Families of missing persons are urged to contact authorities if they suspect a relative may be among the victims. For unidentified remains, officials will retain them and conduct public outreach similar to unidentified body procedures, collecting evidence, DNA samples, and coordinating with police for public announcements. Supamas Explains Plan to Shelve 2026 World Cup Broadcasting Rights Purchase, Warns of Unfair Pricing

Thailand is reconsidering its purchase of 2026 World Cup broadcasting rights due to unfair pricing and changed circumstances including reduced advertising opportunities and altered broadcast timing.

1d ago Khaosod

Deputy Prime Minister Supamas Israphakdi explained on May 19 that the government is reconsidering its plan to purchase broadcasting rights for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, scheduled for June 11 to July 19 in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. While the Prime Minister initially wished to bring joy to Thai citizens by enabling them to watch the tournament, discussions with the state broadcaster, private sector, and the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) revealed changed circumstances. The region's ongoing conflicts, altered broadcast timing, and reduced advertising opportunities have made the investment less viable. Supamas declined to disclose the exact licensing fee due to FIFA regulations but stated it would be impossible to justify to the public. She noted that while Thailand has nearly 70 million people, other countries with populations 20 times larger pay significantly less per capita for the same rights. Given Thailand's economic challenges and the lack of private sector sponsorship support, the government is seeking cabinet approval on how to proceed. Alternative viewing options through FIFA's paid platforms are being investigated, with some matches potentially offering brief free broadcasts. The government remains open to private sector involvement but emphasizes that any investment must be economically sound. Supamas reiterated that unfair pricing means the government will redirect funds elsewhere.

Dr. Jo Promotes Transparent Bangkok, AI Catches Corruption, Returns Over 20 Billion Baht to Bangkok Residents

Dr. Jo's "Transparent Bangkok, AI Catches Corruption" policy deploys artificial intelligence to detect procurement fraud and recover over 20 billion baht for residents. The Bangkok Redflag AI system targets corruption in budget specificatio

1d ago Khaosod

Dr. Jo launches the 'Transparent Bangkok, AI Catches Corruption' policy, featuring the 'Bangkok Redflag AI' system to combat graft and return over 20 billion baht to Bangkok residents. At 09:15 on May 19, 2569, at the Democrat Party headquarters, Chaivatanvijit, the Democrat Party's candidate for Bangkok Governor, announced the 'Transparent Bangkok, AI Catches Corruption' policy, describing corruption as a chronic problem that has long plagued Thailand and undermines the country's economic development, with budgets leaking into individuals' pockets regardless of the amount allocated. This prevents development projects and welfare spending from achieving their full potential, with corruption occurring at all levels—central government and local authorities alike.

With Bangkok's budget in the hundreds of billions of baht, there is an opportunity to address entrenched corruption and return over 20 billion baht to Bangkok residents. The first 10 billion baht comes from preventing corruption in procurement projects, while the second 10 billion comes from savings eliminated through tackling bribery and graft. Chaivatanvijit stated that as a gubernatorial candidate, he aims to systematically cut off these corruption schemes from source to end.

Chaivatanvijit explained that corruption tactics used for decades can be simplified into four steps: writing specifications, locking specifications, inflating middleman prices, and pricing—all steps before Bangkok City Council consideration. When reaching the Council, a TOR is designed before private bidders submit prices. Most of this information exists as paper or image files, preventing computer processing and hiding fraud.

Therefore, the Bangkok Redflag AI system addresses these four steps by making Bangkok transparent. The system has seven core capabilities: 1) All budget items from administration must be in digital format processable by computer or AI, not image files, which is the most critical step for easier fraud detection; 2) Redflaging specs using AI to detect overly narrow specifications that could indicate irregularities; 3) Redflaging expensive prices through AI to investigate suspicious pricing.

Renowned Doctor Discusses Ebola: Will It Spread to Thailand? Points to Disease Severity as a Natural Barrier to Transmission

A Chulalongkorn University microbiologist says Ebola is unlikely to reach Thailand because the disease's extreme severity and high mortality rate actually restrict its spread, unlike more transmissible diseases such as influenza.

1d ago Khaosod

On May 19, 2025, Prof. Dr. Yong Pooworawan from the Department of Microbiology at Chulalongkorn University's Faculty of Medicine addressed concerns about Ebola reaching Thailand. He explained that it is unlikely for Ebola to spread to Thailand because the disease's extreme severity—with mortality rates between 25-90%—actually limits its transmission. Infected individuals become severely ill and rarely have the opportunity to travel long distances by air or across continents, making widespread global pandemics unlikely. Unlike diseases such as influenza or COVID-19, which can spread rapidly due to their lower severity, Ebola's virulent nature restricts its reach.

Ebola is a severe viral infection from the viral hemorrhagic fever group, caused by viruses in the genus Ebolavirus, family Filoviridae. The disease originated in wild animals in Africa and is named after the Ebola River in the Democratic Republic of Congo, where it was first identified in 1976. The largest outbreak occurred between 2013-2016 in West Africa, affecting Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone, with over 30,000 cases and 11,000 deaths. The current outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda involves a moderately severe strain with over 250 cases and 80 deaths, but no vaccine yet exists for this particular variant.

Transmission occurs through direct contact with infected patients or animals, particularly among African communities with traditional practices involving contact with deceased bodies. Each outbreak typically begins in rural areas linked to wildlife, with high transmission in hospitals, resulting in significant healthcare worker casualties. Symptoms include sudden high fever, fatigue, headache, muscle pain, sore throat, vomiting, diarrhea, rash, and uncontrolled bleeding internally and externally.

The World Health Organization emphasizes disease prevention through avoiding contact with patients and animal sources, alongside vaccine development for specific strains. A vaccine now exists for the Zaire strain. Thailand's distance from outbreak epicenters, combined with the disease's severity limiting transmission, means there is currently no cause for excessive concern, though public education about Ebola remains important.
