Floating Stools: A Warning Sign of Eating Too Much Fat? Doctors Reveal 3 Critical Symptoms
Floating stools and right-side rib pain may signal you're eating too much fat beyond what your body can digest, doctors warn, though fat itself isn't inherently fattening if carbohydrate intake is controlled.
Check your digestive system—if you notice "floating stools," it could be a warning sign that you're consuming too much fat. Doctors reveal three important symptoms you shouldn't ignore and how to adjust your habits early.

Based on foreign media reports, the belief that "eating fat makes you fat" remains deeply ingrained among many people trying to lose weight. However, Dr. Li Sixian, a Chinese medical doctor, explains that fat doesn't directly convert to stored body fat—insulin levels are the determining factor. If carbohydrate consumption is properly controlled, fat becomes an efficient energy source that promotes longer-lasting satiety.
That said, consuming too much fat can negatively impact your body, particularly when three warning signs appear: floating stools, tightness or pain in the right rib area, and weight loss plateau. These symptoms may indicate your body is receiving more fat than it needs.
Dr. Li further explains that fat plays a crucial role in the body as a component of the brain, nerve sheaths, and cell membranes. Fat storage also depends on insulin as an intermediary. If eating doesn't trigger excessive insulin, fat is used as energy efficiently and helps reduce carbohydrate cravings—which is why some people on low-carbohydrate diets lose weight effectively.
However, fat consumption still has limits, as each person's ability to digest and absorb fat differs. If you consume more than your body can handle, watch for these warning signs:
1. Diarrhea or floating stools When fat intake exceeds your bile and fat-digesting enzyme capacity, excess fat passes into the intestines, causing diarrhea. If stools appear shiny and greasy, it may signal incomplete fat absorption, often seen in people with gallbladder problems or those who've had gallbladder surgery.
2. Bloating or pain in the right rib area You may also experience sharp pain radiating to the right shoulder. This is a warning sign that your liver and gallbladder are working overtime processing excess fat. If this occurs frequently after high-fat meals, reduce the fat in each meal.
3. Weight loss plateau This occurs in people on low-carbohydrate diets. When your body becomes efficient at burning fat but still receives large amounts externally, it won't tap into stored fat reserves—like continuously refueling a car, so there's no need to use the spare tank.
For those wanting to consume fat healthily, doctors recommend not avoiding it entirely, but finding the right amount for your body. Start with small quantities and gradually increase while monitoring your body's response, since everyone's fat-digestion capacity differs.
Also prioritize the "type of fat" over quantity, choosing fats from natural sources like olive oil, avocado, nuts, grass-fed butter, coconut oil, and fish oil, while avoiding industrially processed vegetable oils.
Doctors emphasize that learning to recognize your body's signals and finding your ideal consumption amount is key to long-term health.
