On August 3, 2024, police and excise officials led by Deputy Police Commissioner General Nirandr Luemsubree announced the dismantling of a major illegal cigarette operation in Muang District, Nakhon Ratchasima Province. The investigation, conducted between July 1-15 as part of a government crackdown on illegal tobacco smuggling, resulted in the seizure of 150 cartons containing 1.5 million cigarettes (75,000 packs) valued at approximately 6.75 million baht, causing the state to lose over 4 million baht in tax revenue.

Investigators discovered that a 73-year-old woman named Pimphon (nickname Tiu) was operating an unlicensed residential address as a front grocery store in Tambon Nai Muang to distribute both retail and wholesale quantities of smuggled foreign cigarettes. After obtaining a court-issued search warrant, officers found various untaxed foreign cigarette brands hidden throughout the premises.

During interrogation, the suspect admitted the cigarettes were hers and intended for sale to regular customers. She claimed to have purchased them from an unknown Thai supplier who smuggled the goods through natural border crossings at Chom Bueng in Surin Province before delivering them via pickup truck. However, investigators remain skeptical and plan to expand the investigation to identify smuggling networks and upstream importers.

The suspect faces charges of concealing, distributing, purchasing, and possessing smuggled goods that bypassed customs procedures and tax payment. She faces potential fines up to 60 million baht. Authorities emphasized that smuggled cigarettes lack quality and safety inspections and may contain harmful molds and dangerous substances that pose serious health risks to consumers.

National Parks Confirms Passport Stamp Program Continues

Thailand's national parks confirm the popular passport stamp collection program will continue under new guidelines, with stamping limited to designated visitor centers to reduce congestion and maintain program integrity.

National Parks Confirms Passport Stamp Program Continues
3 Aug Khaosod

The Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation has clarified its approach to national park passport stamps, firmly denying rumors that the popular collection program is being discontinued. In response to misinformation spreading on social media, the department confirmed the activity will proceed normally with standardized guidelines applied nationwide, effective from a June 11, 2026 departmental directive.

Stamping will now occur only at designated visitor service centers or locations specified by individual parks, with stamping prohibited at toll booths and during park closure hours to maintain order and reduce congestion. The department clarified there are no bans on visitor signatures accompanying stamps or restrictions on owning multiple passport booklets. However, officials may decline stamps if they observe an unusually large number of booklets without clear fellow travelers, to preserve the program's spirit of encouraging independent park tourism.

Director Saysudjai Chunehaworawut stated the stamp-collection initiative remains popular and inspires nature tourism. The parks will continue supporting collectors while improving service points to ensure proper staff oversight and signature verification. Thailand currently operates 156 national parks. Visitors collecting stamps from all 156 parks with complete staff signatures and dates can claim a souvenir at the parks management tourism division. The public is encouraged to continue touring Thailand's national parks while complying with local procedures. During the transition to new service locations, some areas are still communicating with staff, and the department will expedite uniform implementation nationwide. For more information, contact the Tourism and Recreation Management Division at 02 561 0777 extension 1742 during business hours.

Singer Damrong Clears His Name in Marital Rumor Mix-up
3 Aug Khaosod

Singer Damrong Wongthong has firmly denied being implicated in a scandal involving a well-known pre-1990s country music artist who filed for divorce after allegedly having a relationship with a foreign woman, which his wife discovered at a resort. Internet users mistakenly linked multiple singers with similar names to the story, including Damrong Wongthong.

Damrong gave an interview confirming he is not the person in the news and stated his marriage remains loving and understanding. He acknowledged that the person at the center of the scandal once came to him seeking emotional support about their relationship troubles, putting him in an awkward position. However, he declined to judge anyone, noting that personal matters between two people are complex and no outsider knows the full details spanning decades.

When asked about being mistakenly named, Damrong said he was surprised but not worried. "I heard the news like everyone else, but honestly, who?" he replied. He confirmed his wife and he love and understand each other well. Fans did reach out with questions, but Damrong said he has no fear of being misunderstood because he has done nothing wrong.

Regarding whether he had spoken to the person involved, Damrong said there had been some conversation on one side but less on the other. When the person came to him seeking support, they described their long relationship and expressed pain over how their partner had changed. "They seemed to want me to talk to the other person on their behalf," Damrong explained. However, he refused to intervene, saying he does not know the full details of their 20 to 30 years together and cannot judge. He acknowledged feeling awkward being caught in the middle but prefers to stay out of others' personal matters and maintain normal conversation. When asked how long he and his wife have been together and what keeps their marriage strong, Damrong said the key is doing good things and staying on the right path. He firmly reiterated: "It's definitely not us."

Bangkok Approves 93.9 Billion Baht Budget for 2570
3 Aug Khaosod

Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt presented the city's fiscal year 2570 budget of 93,918.92 million baht to the Bangkok Metropolitan Council at its third ordinary session of the year on August 3, 2026. The budget is divided into 93 billion baht for Bangkok Metropolitan Administration and 918.92 million baht for commercial operations, adhering to balanced budget principles and strict fiscal discipline.

Governor Chadchart emphasized that the budget aims to improve residents' lives across all 50 districts, with over 6.6 billion baht allocated for grassroots infrastructure including roads, alleys, sidewalks, sports fields, parks, street lighting, drainage systems, and schools. Although agencies had requested 144.24 billion baht in total, the governor explained that the approved amount reflects Bangkok's legal requirement not to exceed recurring expenditures against recurring revenue, while prioritizing efficiency and value.

The budget supports nine development strategies spanning transportation (15.7 billion baht), environment (5.4 billion baht), safety (4.1 billion baht), health (2.5 billion baht), education (2.5 billion baht), and other sectors. The governor acknowledged that 6 billion baht is committed to green line extension train operations and interest payments, leaving 86.96 billion baht for actual city management and public problem-solving. As of July 6, 2026, Bangkok's bank deposits total over 62.1 billion baht, maintaining financial stability.

Bangkok Councilors Accused of Proxy Voting Face Prison Time

A Bangkok assembly member faces up to 10 years in prison after admitting he cast a proxy vote for an absent colleague during a July 31 council session, violating strict assembly rules against the practice.

Bangkok Councilors Accused of Proxy Voting Face Prison Time
3 Aug Khaosod

On August 3, 2025, Bangkok Metropolitan Assembly officials Suthichai Veerakulsunthon from Jomthong district and Naphapol Jirakul from Bangkoknoi district questioned the case of Pattrasak Niempraneth, a Phaya Thai district assembly member from the People's Party, who allegedly cast a vote for absent colleague Sairam Prakaikit of Sathorn district during a July 31 council session on amended assembly procedural rules.

The vote count showed 42 votes with only 41 members physically present in the chamber. Pattrasak later admitted to casting the proxy vote. System checks revealed that Sairam's voting card remained inserted in the machine despite his absence, a procedure that should have been prevented by removing the card.

Suthichai stated the incident constitutes a serious violation that cannot be overlooked, as assembly rules strictly prohibit proxy voting. Each vote represents law-making that affects the public, and claims of machine malfunction or operator error are unacceptable. Officials must be notified to fix problems rather than having members vote for one another.

Naphapol noted the action violates Section 157, carrying sentences of 1-10 years imprisonment and potential lifetime loss of political rights. Both the person who cast the proxy vote and the absent member who consented bear responsibility. Sairam's failure to object or deny involvement after learning of the proxy vote constitutes complicity in concealing wrongdoing.

On August 5, the Democrat Party will file a complaint with the National Anti-Corruption Commission and notify the Interior Ministry, potentially triggering an investigation and removal proceedings. Historical precedent from parliamentary cases shows courts typically impose prison sentences without suspended sentences for proxy voting violations, considered a serious breach of public representation.

Pheu Thai Denies Coalition Collapse Rumors Amid Government Instability
3 Aug Khaosod

Sirikanya Tansakul, a Pheu Thai list MP and deputy party leader, insisted the party made the right choice supporting Anutin as prime minister to keep Palang Pracharath in power, while stressing she has not ruled out negotiations with the red and green factions over government formation. She downplayed the premier's assertion that he fears no no-confidence debate, noting that public bravado is expected but cautioning that opposition evidence could pose a real threat to government stability.

Speaking at parliament on August 3, Tansakul acknowledged that even without a secret deal between red and green factions, the three-month-old government faces instability rooted in numerous problems including corruption allegations, parliamentary irregularities, and administrative mismanagement—issues she believes may already be making coalition partners reconsider their commitment. She indicated Pheu Thai would table no-confidence motions under Articles 151 and 152 in the coming parliamentary session, pending discussions with opposition allies on timing and procedure.

When asked whether red and green votes alone would be insufficient and require orange (Pheu Thai) support to topple the government, Tansakul confirmed the math works that way, leaving open the possibility of negotiations. However, she firmly closed the door to the blue faction (Democrat Party), saying they would not approach Pheu Thai, and ruled out replacing the green faction with orange in any new coalition, citing ethical objections to Palang Pracharath's leadership.
