Major Smuggled Cigarette Warehouse Busted in Nakhon Ratchasima
Police raided an illegal cigarette warehouse in Nakhon Ratchasima on August 3, seizing 1.5 million smuggled cigarettes valued at 6.75 million baht from a 73-year-old woman operating a front grocery store.
On August 3, 2024, police and excise officials led by Deputy Police Commissioner General Nirandr Luemsubree announced the dismantling of a major illegal cigarette operation in Muang District, Nakhon Ratchasima Province. The investigation, conducted between July 1-15 as part of a government crackdown on illegal tobacco smuggling, resulted in the seizure of 150 cartons containing 1.5 million cigarettes (75,000 packs) valued at approximately 6.75 million baht, causing the state to lose over 4 million baht in tax revenue.
Investigators discovered that a 73-year-old woman named Pimphon (nickname Tiu) was operating an unlicensed residential address as a front grocery store in Tambon Nai Muang to distribute both retail and wholesale quantities of smuggled foreign cigarettes. After obtaining a court-issued search warrant, officers found various untaxed foreign cigarette brands hidden throughout the premises.
During interrogation, the suspect admitted the cigarettes were hers and intended for sale to regular customers. She claimed to have purchased them from an unknown Thai supplier who smuggled the goods through natural border crossings at Chom Bueng in Surin Province before delivering them via pickup truck. However, investigators remain skeptical and plan to expand the investigation to identify smuggling networks and upstream importers.
The suspect faces charges of concealing, distributing, purchasing, and possessing smuggled goods that bypassed customs procedures and tax payment. She faces potential fines up to 60 million baht. Authorities emphasized that smuggled cigarettes lack quality and safety inspections and may contain harmful molds and dangerous substances that pose serious health risks to consumers.
