NAKHON RATCHASIMA – Four provinces in lower northeastern Thailand have reported 570 cases of melioidosis, commonly known as soil fever, and 45 deaths so far this year, with health officials warning farmers and residents to take precautions against infection from contaminated soil and water.

Dr. Sailaak Phimkho, director of the Office of Disease Prevention and Control 9 in Nakhon Ratchasima, said on Thursday that the figures covered the period from 1 January to 22 October 2026.

Buri Ram reported the highest number of cases at 245, with 12 deaths, followed by Surin with 139 cases and 11 deaths, Nakhon Ratchasima with 136 cases and 17 deaths, and Chaiyaphum with 50 cases and five deaths.

People aged 65 and older accounted for the largest number of cases, followed by those aged 55–64 and 45–54.

The department warned that the risk of infection increases during prolonged periods of rain and flooding, when people are more likely to come into contact with wet soil, mud, and contaminated water.

Melioidosis is caused by the bacterium Burkholderia pseudomallei, which occurs naturally in soil and water. The infection can enter the body through cuts or other breaks in the skin, inhalation of contaminated dust or droplets, or consumption of contaminated water or food. Severe cases can be fatal.

Farmers and people cleaning their homes after floodwaters recede are among those urged to take extra care because of their increased exposure to soil and water.

Health officials advised people to avoid direct contact with potentially contaminated soil and water where possible. Those who need to work in fields or clean flooded areas should wear protective equipment, including rubber boots, gloves, and long trousers or suitable waterproof clothing.

People with open wounds should avoid contact with soil and water until their wounds have completely healed, the department said.

Editorial: Government Must Act as Fuel Prices Rise Amid Floods

An editorial urges the Thai government to introduce concrete relief measures after a third fuel price hike in one month raised some prices by 2.10 baht per liter, compounding hardship for flood-affected communities. The piece argues that standard belt-tightening advice no longer works for households with no expenses left to cut, and calls for targeted fuel tax cuts, public transport subsidies, and faster, broader flood compensation to prevent a cost-of-living crisis from becoming a crisis of public trust.
