Meteor Shower This Weekend Not Worth Watching, Says Thai Astronomy Society

The Southern Delta Aquarids meteor shower peaks this weekend, but Thailand's Astronomy Society advises against watching due to heavy monsoon clouds, a full moon, and an exceptionally low meteor rate of just 15-20 per hour.

Meteor Shower This Weekend Not Worth Watching, Says Thai Astronomy Society
28 Jul Khaosod

The Thai Astronomy Society posted on Facebook on July 28 that a meteor shower will occur July 28–30, but viewing is not recommended. The event is the Southern Delta Aquarids meteor shower, named after the radiiant point near the star Delta Aquarii.

Three reasons discourage observation: the meteor shower has an exceptionally low peak rate of only 15–20 meteors per hour; it occurs during Thailand's rainy season when cloud cover is typically heavy; and this year it coincides with the full moon, causing moonlight to dominate the night sky.

The society's lack of recommendation does not constitute a prohibition, only an attempt to manage expectations. Interested observers may still watch during the window between 1 a.m. and dawn by recline, looking broadly at the sky without focusing on a single spot, and avoiding high hopes.

Police responded at 7:00 a.m. on July 28, 2569 to a shooting incident in Laharn Subdistrict, Bangbuathong District, Nonthaburi Province. Officers found two bodies on the ground floor: a 71-year-old man and a 74-year-old woman, both shot dead. Two other family members were wounded trying to intervene.

The suspect, identified as the grandson of the deceased victims, arrived at the house around 6:30 a.m. and got into an argument with the family over a land access dispute. Residents who witnessed the shooting subdued the suspect with a knife to the head before police arrived.

According to investigators, the conflict stemmed from a decade-long property dispute over shared access to adjoining properties. The suspect was taken to hospital for treatment of his head wound, and the firearm used in the shooting was seized as evidence. The incident resulted in two deaths and injuries to three others, including the suspect.

Labor Minister Says Social Security Board Election Will Proceed September 27

Thailand's Labor Minister confirmed the Social Security Board election will proceed on September 27 if an administrative court lifts a temporary suspension order filed by a legal challenger over registration procedures.

Labor Minister Says Social Security Board Election Will Proceed September 27
28 Jul Khaosod

Labor Minister Chulphan Amornvivat addressed the postponement of the Social Security Board election at a press conference on July 28, 2025, at Sanam Luang. He explained that someone filed a case with the administrative court claiming the board registration announcement was improper, prompting the court to issue a temporary suspension order. The Social Security Office held an election committee meeting on July 27 but halted proceedings to await clarity from the court on whether the election can proceed. If the court rules favorably and lifts the suspension, the ministry will keep the original September 27 election date.

Amornvivat said the situation involves two aspects: the 2564-2565 election regulations that were in place when he took office, and public and civil society demands to expedite the election process. He emphasized the necessity of having a fully empowered board to operate the Social Security Office efficiently. When asked if politics was involved in the legal challenge, he declined to speculate, noting he does not know the complainant personally. He stressed that the challenger has legitimate legal rights to file the case, and the office must follow proper procedures.

When asked about the risk of delays jeopardizing the September 27 deadline, Amornvivat expressed hope that the election would not be postponed, as a new fully functional board is urgently needed. He dismissed opposition claims that the government lacked sincerity, saying he had engaged extensively with opposition members and civil society groups and demonstrated genuine commitment. He reiterated that regardless of the court proceedings, an election for the Social Security Board must take place, and the office will follow all legal steps to ensure it happens.

Deputy PM Says Top Politicians' Bond Remains Solid After Photo
28 Jul Khaosod

At 6:45 a.m. on July 28 at Sanam Luang, Pipat Ratchakitprakarn, Deputy Prime Minister and Transport Minister and a core leader of the Bhumjaithai Party, addressed claims about a meeting between three figures—Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, Bhumjaithai Party leader, and Nevin Chidchob, chairman of Buriram United FC. Pipat said the matter did not warrant questioning and that they meet weekly as standard practice and take photos together routinely. He stated that making the photo public would help reduce speculation, otherwise the media would continue to fuel rumors about an issue whose origin he could not identify. When asked if other matters were discussed during the meeting, Pipat confirmed they hold weekly meetings as normal procedure and that there is no truth to any discord narrative. He added that Nevin, being a political figure himself, does not concern himself with such rumors, understanding that attempts to sow division among political figures are common. Pipat emphasized they meet every week and speak by phone almost daily about various matters. Regarding a post by Kruna Chidchob, Nevin's wife, using the phrase "good friends stick together, traitors get cut off," Pipat said he had not seen it and could not comment. When asked if he could confirm the three figures would never split, Pipat stated they have maintained their relationship for 10-20 years and everything must be resolved through reasoned discussion on both professional and personal matters.

TK Park Convenes National Network to Design Future Learning Spaces
28 Jul Khaosod

TK Park is advancing development of its nationwide learning park network, aiming to establish a strong learning ecosystem and expand collaboration across sectors. The institute is hosting a practical workshop called "Co-Creating Networks Toward a Common Goal" for fiscal year 2569 from July 21–23, 2569 at the Best Western Sukhumvit Hotel in Bangkok. The three-day event convenes learning park networks nationwide to exchange experiences, build staff capacity, and design approaches to upgrade learning areas tailored to local community needs.

The initiative is central to TK Park's mission to develop a comprehensive "Learning Ecosystem" that links cooperation among government agencies, the private sector, educational institutions, civil society, and communities. The goal is to expand access to quality learning resources for people of all ages and position learning spaces as key mechanisms for human development, job creation, and sustainable quality of life improvement.

The workshop launched on July 21 with opening remarks from Suranart Phokananth, head of learning park network development, followed by sessions covering policy perspectives, contemporary knowledge, and practical implementation. Highlights include a keynote on "Future of Learning Spaces: Global and Local Trends," a brainstorming session on "Learning Spaces Suited to Local Context," and case studies including the Songwat RE:BORN project, which demonstrates revitalization of an old quarter through community power, creativity, and new economy. Participants also conducted field visits to Thonburi Film Archive and Legendary Wargame to explore learning dimensions through history, cinema, and creative activities.

Additional workshop components include a prototyping session for designing learning resource concepts and a "Network Commitment & Next Step" activity to set collaborative goals moving forward. The seminar aligns with TK Park's 2569 operational strategy, emphasizing four core missions: sustaining and developing existing networks, strengthening network capacity, expanding collaborative partnerships, and forging strategic alliances both domestically and internationally to integrate knowledge in economics, vocational skills, innovation, and human capital development into community learning spaces.

Building Collapses During Orange Line Demolition in Bangkok
28 Jul Khaosod

The Mass Transit Authority of Thailand (MRTA) has explained the circumstances of a building collapse that occurred during demolition work on Pracha Songkhro Soi 28 in the Din Daeng district on the evening of July 27, 2026. No injuries or fatalities were reported, and the MRTA has ordered the contractor to clear the area quickly. The incident happened during the demolition of a reclaimed building to prepare the site for construction of the Orange Line BTS extension project from Bang Khun Non to the Thailand Cultural Center. Initial investigation shows the collapse followed the planned demolition line, with proper safety barriers and supervision in place, so no members of the public were in the work zone. However, some corrugated metal sheeting from the collapsed structure spilled into adjacent residential areas.

The MRTA has instructed its project consultants and contractors to cordon off the affected area, warn residents to avoid the site, remove the scattered materials from neighboring properties, and restore the area to normal conditions. The authority emphasized that all future work must proceed with extreme caution and strict adherence to maximum safety standards at every stage. The MRTA apologized for the incident and pledged to work with its consultants and contractors to implement preventive measures to avoid a recurrence and ensure public safety and confidence.

Man Rushes Injured Girlfriend to Hospital on Motorcycle

An 18-year-old woman fell from a third-floor dormitory balcony in Rayong on July 28; her boyfriend rushed her to the hospital on a motorcycle, but a blanket became tangled in the wheel spokes until rescue workers arrived to help.

Man Rushes Injured Girlfriend to Hospital on Motorcycle
28 Jul Khaosod

At midnight on July 28, 2025, rescue officers from the Sawang Prake Kusol Foundation in Rayong received a report of an 18-year-old woman who had fallen from the third-floor balcony of a dormitory in Chiang Noen subdistrict, Muang district, Rayong province, and rushed to assist.

While en route, officers found the woman's boyfriend transporting his injured girlfriend on the back of a motorcycle heading to the hospital. However, the blanket wrapped around her body came loose and became tangled in the motorcycle's wheel spokes, making it impossible to continue riding. Fortunately, rescue officials arrived just in time, provided immediate first aid, and safely transported the woman to a private hospital.

When questioned, the boyfriend explained that his girlfriend had walked out onto the third-floor dormitory balcony shortly before the fall. He was unsure of exactly how she fell to the level below. Shocked and worried about his girlfriend—who reported severe pain in her back and both legs—he did not wait for emergency responders to provide proper first aid for a fall victim. Instead, he hastily put her on the back of his motorcycle to take her to the hospital himself.

When they reached Highway 36, the blanket slipped and wrapped around the motorcycle's wheel spokes, causing the bike to break down. Fortunately, rescue officials passed by, found them, and helped transport the injured woman to the hospital in time.
