Norwegian Vagrant Deported After Three Years in Thailand
A 44-year-old Norwegian man is being deported after overstaying his visa by nearly four years while living as a vagrant in Nonthaburi Province, sleeping in temple pavilions and scavenging for food.
Authorities are arranging the deportation of Odd Stian Hesseberg, a 44-year-old Norwegian man found living as a vagrant and scavenging through garbage in Bang Talat Subdistrict, Pak Kret District, Nonthaburi Province, where he had been sleeping in temple pavilions. Hesseberg entered Thailand on March 3, 2023, on a 30-day tourist visa and subsequently applied for extensions, with his last recorded permission at Nakhon Sawan Immigration on April 21, 2023. Immigration authorities in Nonthaburi have now found him to be overstaying by 1,179 days and have detained him for questioning; they will proceed with legal processes to coordinate with his embassy for repatriation to Norway. Hesseberg expressed his gratitude to temple officials and local residents who supported him throughout his stay, and said he was pleased to be returning home after more than three years in Thailand.
