Officials Test Trairyok Mine Site For Heavy Metal Contamination
Officials collected water and soil samples from an illegal mining site in Kanchanaburi's Trairyok district to test for heavy metal contamination that could threaten nearby residents and natural resources.
On September 7, Natural Resources and Environment Minister Suchat Chomklin instructed ministry agencies to investigate and monitor environmental impacts from illegal mining in Trairyok district, Kanchanaburi province. The inspection aims to prevent harm to natural resources, environmental quality, and nearby residents from the unlawful mining operations.
The Kanchanaburi Natural Resources and Environment Office, Forest Management Office Region 10, and Pollution Control Office Region 8 conducted a joint site inspection and collected water and soil samples for laboratory analysis. The testing will assess whether heavy metals or contaminants have spread beyond the mining area and evaluate potential impacts on natural resources, water quality, environmental conditions, and public health and safety in surrounding communities.
Once laboratory results are complete, relevant agencies will report findings to the Kanchanaburi provincial governor for consideration of appropriate legal action and enforcement.
