PM Assures Songkhla of Flood Preparedness

Prime Minister Anuthim Charnveerakul met with Songkhla residents to assure them the government is fully prepared for the upcoming monsoon season following last year's severe flooding. He emphasized coordinated efforts across all ministries

PM Assures Songkhla of Flood Preparedness
3h ago Khaosod

At 1:35 p.m. on July 10, 2025, at Wat Tha Chang in Bang Klam District, Songkhla Province, Prime Minister Anuthim Charnveerakul and the Interior Minister met with local residents. The PM said he had made full use of his day—spending the morning in Malaysia before visiting the Sadao border to open a new customs checkpoint and improve cross-border connectivity with Malaysia.

The PM emphasized that today's visit was not merely a courtesy call but an opportunity to discuss disaster prevention preparations. With the monsoon approaching in a few months, and given last year's severe flooding damage in Songkhla, the government has learned lessons and is fully preparing to prevent similar disasters and spare residents hardship.

The PM stated that if the government were not committed to resolving all issues before year's end, they would not have mobilized all relevant officials to meet with residents. Despite his concerns about potential failures, he brought all accountable parties together, positioning himself as the primary responsible party while ensuring shared responsibility across all ministries—from Transportation managing traffic, Finance managing budgets, Tourism ensuring visitor safety, and Public Health improving medical services affected by last year's flooding.

The PM confirmed that all soldiers, police, civil servants, provincial governors, and local officials are coordinated in the area to solve problems. He recalled being in Khon Kaen on a Saturday morning but rushed to Hat Yai after learning of severe flooding there. Critical shortages were discovered—even basic foods like noodle soup were unavailable because residents had hoarded supplies at home.

The PM noted that the major post-flood task is cleanup and sanitation, which typically takes one to two months before Hat Yai returns to normal. He emphasized the government's commitment to providing comprehensive assistance without abandonment, urging residents to be confident in these efforts.

Police arrested a drug-affected man who fired shots in a Songkhla neighborhood on July 9, injuring two people. He claimed to fear an attack from an acquaintance. During negotiations for surrender, he fired approximately three rounds before agreeing to hand over his weapon after speaking with his mother. However, while clearing a round from the chamber as instructed by police, the gun discharged and struck his own leg.

When officers arrived at Roomjai Community, Soi 8 behind Rong Wat Temple on Chai-Phetchmongkol Road, they found Khata, 29, standing in front of the victims' home with a gun. Police cordoned off a 200-meter radius and negotiated his surrender. Authorities recovered a modified blank gun converted to fire .380 ammunition and seized additional rounds.

The two injured victims—Sarawut, 28, grazed on the buttock, and Chirapa Rattanasriranod, 19, grazed on the chin—were treated at Songkhla Hospital for non-serious wounds.

According to the victim's sister, the suspect is her brother's friend who appeared paranoid and believed her brother intended to harm him, prompting him to arrive armed. Police charged Khata with five offenses: attempted murder, attempted murder of a government official, obstruction of duty, illegal firearm possession, and unauthorized firearm carrying. He was transferred to Muang Songkhla Police Station for further legal proceedings.

Prime Minister Anuthine Charnveerakul expressed confidence that repairs to the Royal Project No. 1 drainage canal in Hat Yai will be completed before the rainy season arrives. The Irrigation Department has already prepared for the work.

On July 10, 2025, at 1:15 p.m. in Bang Klam district, Songkhla province, the PM and Interior Minister inspected the canal's damage caused by water erosion. He was accompanied by Deputy PM Phipat Ratchakij (Transport Minister), Deputy PM Ekkaniti Nitithand (Finance Minister), Agriculture Minister Suriya Chungrungruengkit, and Bhumjaithai Party leader Nipont Bunnamani.

Upon arrival, the PM received a briefing on water management in the area, walked to the damaged sites, and instructed officials to accelerate repairs. When asked if the repairs would be completed before the flood season, the Irrigation Department director confirmed they would be on schedule. The department has already prepared remedial plans. The PM emphasized today's field visit was necessary to review budget allocations. The central budget for the Irrigation Department must receive approval before the fiscal year ends.

When asked whether the PM would emphasize that the southern region would be safe, Anuthine stated that the focus was on disaster prevention and damage reduction, with all preparations already in place.

Regarding questions about a 99-million-baht central budget allocation being distributed only to areas where Bhumjaithai Party has representatives, the PM responded that this was purely a political concern. He clarified that these were government responsibilities, not political matters, and that no specific party was involved—only the people.

On July 10, 2026, Region 6 Operations Unit 2 (Songkhla), led by Captain Thanakan Uchonratsami and Deputy Captain Patthdon Poolphiphatthan, arrested an 18-year-old suspect identified as "A" at a vehicle repair shop in Tambon Kuanlang, Hat Yai District, Songkhla Province. He was wanted by court warrant from Nakhon Si Thammarat Provincial Court on charges of sexual assault of a child under 13, indecent conduct with a child under 15, and child abduction from parents or guardians.

When arrested, the suspect appeared confused about why he was being detained. Officers informed him that the 13-year-old girl's father had filed a complaint alleging he had relations with his daughter and refused to take responsibility.

According to the suspect's account, approximately three months prior while living in Chachoengsao District, Nakhon Si Thammarat Province, he became involved with a 13-year-old girl. Their relationship progressed to living together, which became public knowledge. The girl's family then arranged a formal marriage proposal and demanded a dowry of 500,000 baht.

The suspect explained that at only 18 years old, he lacked the means to secure the required dowry. The girl's family subsequently prohibited contact between him and the girl. He then found work at a vehicle repair shop in Hat Yai and relocated there for employment, cutting off further communication with the girl's family. He assumed the matter had been resolved and was unaware the family had filed a complaint against him.

On July 10, 2026, Thai Prime Minister Anuthин Charnweerakul and Malaysian Prime Minister Dato' Seri Anwar Ibrahim presided over the opening ceremony of the connecting road between Sadao Customs Checkpoint in Songkhla Province and Bukit Kayu Hitam Checkpoint in Kedah, Malaysia. The ceremony was attended by Deputy Prime Ministers Pipat Ratchakitprakarn and Ekniti Nitithanpong, Tourism and Sports Minister Suraskul Pantcharoenkul, and Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) Governor Thapanee Kiarungloy.

The project marks a significant infrastructure development that strengthens transportation, trade, and tourism connections between the two nations, supporting the government's "Ease of Traveling" policy and enhancing Thailand's competitiveness as an ASEAN travel hub.

Tourism Minister Suraskul described the new road as tourism infrastructure that creates added economic value for overland tourism growth, particularly attracting Malaysian tourists who predominantly travel by land. The ministry is conducting active marketing in collaboration with Malaysian tourism partners and automotive clubs to encourage personal vehicle and caravan travel into Thailand.

The strategy includes promoting scenic routes for cross-border tourism, distributing tourism revenue to Southern border towns, and strengthening Thailand's position as an ASEAN tourism center.

TAT Governor Thapanee stated the authority is pursuing a "Value over Volume" strategy to attract quality tourists. The Sadao checkpoint upgrade is viewed as boosting Thailand's competitiveness and supports the Indonesia–Malaysia–Thailand Growth Triangle (IMT-GT) framework for regional economic and tourism integration.

TAT aims to develop Southern Thailand into a tourism gateway connecting Thailand–Malaysia–Singapore routes and enhance Thailand's role as an ASEAN tourism hub. During the Sadao opening, TAT is launching the "New Hatyai" project, inviting Malaysian social media influencers to showcase the city's tourism offerings.

Russian Model's Striking Haaland Resemblance Goes Viral
3h ago Khaosod

The online world is buzzing over a young Russian woman who bears a striking resemblance to Norway national team star Erling Haaland, with football fans jokingly calling them twins after a video of her mimicking his signature goal celebration pose went viral globally.

The woman is Anastasiya Kostromitina, a 24-year-old model from Moscow, Russia. The viral moment started when her mother Maria posted a humorous video on Instagram showing her daughter imitating Haaland's distinctive pose and celebration moves.

The timing was perfect, occurring just 24 hours after Haaland scored two goals against Brazil, when interest in the Norwegian striker was at peak intensity. The clip spread rapidly and went viral within hours.

Maria's Reels video garnered over 107 million views with more than 76,700 comments, while copycat videos from other users further amplified the trend, accumulating tens of millions of views in a single day.

What excited viewers was the uncanny similarity between the two—blonde hair, grayish-blue eyes, sharp facial features, and a distinctive gaze—leading netizens to joke: "Are they half-siblings?" Some even quipped: "No DNA test needed."

However, Anastasiya revealed that people have been comparing her to Haaland for over four years. Initially, she didn't feel good about it because she didn't understand why so many people saw her as resembling the famous footballer.

Over time, she changed her perspective, viewing it as a good opportunity and choosing to use the resemblance to her advantage. She noted that negative comments don't create problems, as they ultimately boost engagement on her content.

The trend coincided with buildup to the World Cup match between England and Norway, intensifying conversations about Haaland. He entered the tournament as joint top scorer with seven goals, so if he scores against England, Anastasiya's comment section will certainly explode.

Myanmar Artillery Shell Hits Thai Temple in Mae Sot

Myanmar artillery fire crossed into Thailand on July 10, striking a Mae Sot temple during intense clashes with opposition forces across the border, forcing monks to evacuate as Thai authorities sealed the site and deployed security forces.

Myanmar Artillery Shell Hits Thai Temple in Mae Sot
4h ago Khaosod

A critical security situation erupted on the Thai-Myanmar border at noon on July 10, 2025, when Myanmar's Light Infantry Battalion 22 and artillery units launched a sustained barrage of heavy weapons against Karen National Liberation Army (KNLA) positions based in villages including Minlaypan and Phaloo in Miao District, Miao State, across the Moei River from Mae Sot.

During the continuous bombardment, one artillery round crossed the Moei River and struck Huay Mahawong Temple in Mae Sot district, landing near the abbot's residence. Monks and novices fled in panic, though fortunately the shell's fuse malfunctioned. Thai authorities sealed the temple and sent explosive ordnance disposal teams to safely recover the round.

As Thai soldiers worked on the recovery, two Myanmar military jets appeared overhead and dropped four large bombs on opposition positions, creating massive explosions and black smoke clouds less than one kilometer from the Thai-Myanmar border. The intense bombardment prompted village leaders in Mae Mao Gen and surrounding communities to announce emergency orders via loudspeaker, demanding all residents take shelter in bunkers and prohibiting travel along roads parallel to the Moei River.

All roads in the area are now saturated with Thai military and security forces, including Rangers, Border Patrol Police, and local militias, positioned with armored vehicles and heavy weapons. Authorities remain on full alert, concerned that Myanmar's military will escalate with the heaviest aerial assault yet as they attempt to seize all opposition-held territory. Security forces are conducting round-the-clock operations to protect Thai civilians amid the deteriorating situation.
