Police Rescue Student from Scam, Recover 400,000 Baht
Police rescued a 19-year-old student from a call-center scam in Bangkok, recovering 400,000 baht she had transferred and handed to an accomplice.
On November 3, 2026, Police Lieutenant Colonel Sakya Saengwan, Deputy Commander of the CIB, together with Police Major Saran Suradechanon, Deputy Superintendent of Din Daeng Police Station, and Police Major Thanas Sri-jampa, Deputy Superintendent of Huai Khwang Police Station, led investigative officers from both stations to assist Miss Han (pseudonym), a 19-year-old Buriram native and second-year student at a well-known university. She had been targeted by a scam network that called her, claiming her name was linked to an online gambling case. The fraudsters then posed as police officers on a video call, pressuring her to transfer money. She lost over 400,000 baht and was about to send more when police intervened in time.
The investigation unit was alerted by the PCT at the CIB around 11:00 a.m. that Miss Han had called her father for 500,000 baht and transferred it to the criminals in three installments of 49,900 baht each, totaling 149,700 baht. She also withdrew 250,000 baht in cash and handed it to an accomplice near her dormitory in Soi Pracha Songkhro 27, Ratchadaphisek Subdistrict, Din Daeng District, Bangkok.
Police Lieutenant Colonel Sakya and Din Daeng investigators went to her room while she was still on a video call with the scammers. She refused to open the door, forcing officers to break it down. They explained she was being deceived and escorted her to file a report at Din Daeng Police Station.
Miss Han revealed the gang initially called pretending to be a mobile network operator, saying someone had used her number to advertise online gambling. They advised her to report it to Phichit City Police for clearance, then connected her with a fake officer via Line video call. The impostor threatened her with an extortion case worth about 500,000 baht and demanded she transfer money for verification. They also coached her to lie to her parents, claiming she needed 500,000 baht as a guarantee for a scholarship to study in South Korea.
Her parents were alerted by their bank after she withdrew a large sum and transferred it to unknown accounts. When they couldn't reach her by phone, they contacted police. Officers have taken her to file a formal complaint, while the CIB and Din Daeng police continue tracking the cash collector. CCTV footage shows the suspect as a tall man wearing a long-sleeved blue polo shirt and slacks, who fled in a car after receiving the 250,000 baht.
