Police Seize 2.74 Million Meth Pills Hidden in Furniture at Mae Sai
Police seized 2.74 million methamphetamine pills hidden inside furniture at the Mae Sai border crossing on October 29, arresting two Myanmar nationals.
On October 29, 2026, the 3rd Cavalry Regiment Special Forces under the Tak Task Force, Border Patrol Police, Mae Sai Customs, Mae Sai Police, and Chiang Rai Immigration established a checkpoint at the vehicle entry lane of the permanent border crossing at the First Thai-Myanmar Friendship Bridge in Ban Mae Sai, Moo 1, Wiang Phang Kham Subdistrict, Mae Sai District, Chiang Rai Province. The operation aimed to prevent and intercept violations of the Narcotics Act.
During the inspection, officers spotted a man and a woman of Myanmar nationality driving a small Myanmar-registered truck toward the checkpoint. Their suspicious behavior prompted a search, which uncovered two mattresses and three sofas that weighed far more than normal and did not match the typical characteristics of such items.
At 12:30 p.m., officials transported the vehicle and all items to the Mae Sai Customs checkpoint at the Second Thai-Myanmar Friendship Bridge in Ban San Phak Hi, Moo 3, Mae Sai Subdistrict, for X-ray examination. The scan revealed methamphetamine pills hidden inside the mattresses and sofas, totaling approximately 2,740,000 tablets.
Under questioning, both suspects confessed they had been hired by a Myanmar acquaintance for 100,000 baht to transport the goods to a department store branch in Mae Sai. Authorities have detained the two suspects along with the vehicle and all evidence, transferring them to Mae Sai Police Station for legal proceedings and further investigation to identify additional accomplices.
