Senegal Midfielder Gueye Takes Indefinite Break From National Team
Villarreal midfielder Pape Gueye withdraws from Senegal indefinitely, demanding new coaching staff after the team's World Cup elimination and loss of the Africa Cup of Nations title.
Pape Gueye, a midfielder for Villarreal in La Liga Spain, has announced an indefinite break from playing for Senegal until the national team brings in a new coaching staff. This decision comes after Senegal's elimination in the Round of 32 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Gueye announced his decision via Instagram, stating: "I will later speak about our elimination, but today I announce that I am taking a break from the national team as long as the current coaching staff remains in place."
The Senegal national team is currently facing a string of negative developments. These include losing the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations crown, unconfirmed reports of players not receiving bonuses, head coach Pape Jeaux's failure to reach agreement on a new contract with the federation, and even food supply problems at the World Cup accommodation.
Gueye also appears to have issues stemming from the Round of 32 match, in which Senegal lost to Belgium 2-3 in 120 minutes. He was substituted out at the 66-minute mark, with Coach Jeaux explaining that the player was becoming fatigued. However, Gueye countered that his physical condition was normal and healthy.
The 27-year-old Gueye has earned 45 caps for Senegal, scoring 7 goals. At this World Cup, he appeared in all four of Senegal's matches, contributing 2 goals and 1 assist.
