Singapore Coach: We're Only Down Two Goals in Cup Loss
Singapore's coach says defensive lapses on counter-attacks cost them in a 3-1 loss to Thailand in the AFC Cup semi-final, but remains upbeat ahead of the return leg with just a two-goal deficit to overcome.
Singapore head coach Gavin Lee acknowledged that his team's defending on counter-attacks was inadequate following their loss to Thailand in the opening semi-final match of the 2026 AFC Cup. Despite the defeat, Lee said supporters remain confident, noting that Singapore is only two goals down heading into the second leg. He emphasized that mental strength will be crucial moving forward.
The first semi-final leg took place on August 15 at Jallan Besar Stadium, where Thailand (ranked 94th in the world) defeated Singapore (ranked 148th) 3-1. Thailand's victory gives them an advantage heading into the second leg in their home stadium.
