In Trang, people from across Southern Thailand are flocking to queue for free treatment for nerve and bone conditions from Khru Mo Phong (Samphong Senaniad), a 57-year-old healer from Nanin village in Yan Ta Khao district. Patients travel from Trang, Krabi, Satun, Suratthani, Phatthalung, Phuket, Yala, Pattani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Songkhla, Phang Nga, and Chumphon seeking relief for strained tendons, rigid joints, shoulder pain, stroke, and paralysis.
Khru Mo Phong treats approximately 100 patients daily using only coconut oil massage combined with ancient chanting and salt rituals passed down for over 100 years. He performs treatments for free, providing accommodation and meals to patients traveling from distant provinces. The practice resembles the veneration of Khru Mo Manohra (a spiritual healing tradition), earning him the nickname "Khru Mo En" (nerve master).
According to Samphong, he inherited the healing knowledge from his ancestors and believes that charging fees would bring misfortune, as the practice is rooted in Buddhist merit-making principles. The treatment uses only coconut oil and salt—no other medications. Despite no formal appointments, word-of-mouth recommendations and his TikTok following (hundreds of thousands) have made him increasingly popular. Health officials from the local health center oversee his practice. Samphong began serious practice approximately 18 months ago after recovering from a mysterious illness he was told could only be healed if he inherited and practiced this ancestral healing tradition.
