Spain head coach Luis de la Fuente expressed satisfaction with his team's near-perfect performance and said the squad will continue to develop further. Austria manager Ralph Rangnick acknowledged his team's inferiority and accepted the defeat as deserved.
In the 2026 World Cup Round of 32 match on July 2, Spain defeated Austria 3-0 to advance to the Round of 16. The team will await the winner of the Portugal-Croatia match, which takes place on July 6.
Spain's goals came from Miguel Oyarzabal in the 36th and 89th minutes, and Pedro Porro in the 66th minute. This marks Spain's first knockout stage victory in 16 years since winning the World Cup in 2010.
De la Fuente said: "I'm happy because we played nearly perfectly in every aspect. But we still need to develop further. Every match from here on will be difficult. Everyone can always improve, and that's what this team needs. These players always want more."
Rangnick commented: "I want to congratulate Spain. Frankly, it's hard to accept defeat because we prepared well, but sometimes you have to accept that the opposing team is superior. And today, they really were superior to us."
