Subdistrict Council Chief Arrested in Major Methamphetamine Smuggling Ring
A subdistrict council chairman in Nakhon Phanom Province was arrested with 400,000 methamphetamine tablets hidden in fertilizer sacks near the Mekong River border in a major international smuggling operation.
On July 30, 2025, at the Ranger Company 2102 base in Tha Uthen District, Nakhon Phanom Province, district officials and military rangers announced the arrest of a key international methamphetamine trafficking network member, identified as Mr. A, age 49, who holds the position of SAO council chairman. Officers confiscated 400,000 methamphetamine tablets concealed in two fertilizer sacks.
The arrest followed an investigation that revealed the suspect's long-standing involvement in drug trafficking. He had been coordinating the delivery of methamphetamine to the banks of the Mekong River along the Nakhon Phanom border, where it was held pending transport into Thailand's interior. During a stakeout operation, authorities spotted the suspect walking down to the riverbank to collect sacks of methamphetamine that the smuggling network had left at the border for temporary storage before moving them to a cattle pen in Nong Tao Subdistrict.
When officers moved in for arrest, the suspect attempted to flee and initially denied involvement. However, evidence proved conclusive, and he was taken into custody for interrogation. He has made a preliminary confession to being hired for the operation but has not yet provided full details. Authorities plan to expand the investigation, pursue connected network members, and proceed with legal action. Records indicate this is a major trafficking operation, with the suspect receiving substantial payments in the hundreds of thousands of baht for each delivery of hundreds of thousands of tablets.
Background checks revealed the suspect's long history of drug involvement. After leaving his position as village headman, he registered as an SAO member in two terms and rose to council chairman. His wife was previously imprisoned on drug charges related to methamphetamine possession from several years ago.
