Thai Airways Hostess Caught Smuggling Heroin in Australia

Australian police arrested a Thai Airways flight attendant at the airport attempting to smuggle heroin, raising serious concerns about airline security and Thailand's international reputation.

2h ago Khaosod

Australian police arrested a traveler attempting to smuggle drugs at the airport—a common occurrence involving Thai nationals. However, this case gained major attention because the suspect was a Thai Airways flight attendant, sparking widespread criticism. Thai Airways employees rarely face such serious criminal charges, as the national carrier maintains strict personnel screening standards. The incident raises serious concerns about how a drug smuggling case involving airline staff could damage Thailand's international reputation.

Investigations suggest the hostess may not have known the item she was paid to carry contained heroin, indicating she may have been deceived. However, this likely won't reduce her sentence, as she was caught transporting illegal substances at the airport and will face severe punishment.

This serious incident must serve as a major lesson for Thai Airways, its employees, and all flight crews. Airlines already prohibit staff from accepting paid courier work—a company regulation violation. While past incidents involved brand-name goods smuggled to avoid taxes, drug trafficking is far more serious.

The case should lead to stricter enforcement of anti-courier policies, driven both by ethical consciousness and fear of harsh penalties for unknowingly transporting drugs. A well-paid profession should have a future, but ignoring regulations for extra income could end one's life.

This incident severely damages Thailand's international image, potentially affecting Thai travelers, business people, and exporters with heightened inspections and inconvenience at borders. More critically, it makes Thailand appear as a haven for drug traffickers, threatening lives in other countries.

Australian police are coordinating intensively with Thai authorities and narcotics agents to investigate the drug source, its origins, and the trafficking network in Thailand. They aim to dismantle operations completely to prevent further heroin entering Australia and destroying lives there.

The government must seriously address the root cause: production facilities on neighboring borders. Drug manufacturing operations must be dismantled. The damage to our nation is severe and consequential.

Transformer Explosion Sparks Fire in Patong, Damages Shops

A power transformer explosion near Phuket's Meatball Roundabout sparked a fire that destroyed motorcycles and damaged two papaya salad vendor stalls, with damages estimated at 300,000-500,000 baht and no injuries reported.

2h ago Khaosod

A power transformer explosion sparked a major fire in Patong, Phuket on July 2, 2025 at 5:10 PM near the Meatball Roundabout on Pang Muang Sai Road. The Patong Municipality Disaster Prevention Center received reports that the transformer had exploded, sending sparks and flames onto parked motorcycles and two nearby papaya salad vendor stalls. Police closed the surrounding area to prevent further danger from continued explosions and flying debris, allowing municipal fire trucks to respond. Firefighters brought the blaze under control in 15 minutes.

Initial investigation found one to two motorcycles completely destroyed by fire and two papaya salad shops severely damaged. Local residents reported hearing a loud explosion from the transformer, followed by sparks raining down onto the parked vehicles, which ignited rapidly. The fire then spread to the nearby vendor stalls.

No injuries or fatalities were reported. Authorities are investigating the cause, with preliminary findings suggesting the transformer failure triggered the initial explosion and fire, which then spread to the motorcycles and shops. Estimated damages are between 300,000 and 500,000 baht.

Working Team Won't Field Bangkok Council Chair Candidate

The Working Team group will not field a candidate for Bangkok Metropolitan Administration Council chairman, instead supporting the party with the most election votes in line with democratic principles. Group leader Dr. Duangrit Banjachikul

2h ago Khaosod

The 'Working Team' group has announced it will not field any candidates for Bangkok Metropolitan Administration Council chairman, citing democratic principles. Group leader Dr. Duangrit Banjachikul made the announcement on July 2, responding to nominations of three candidates: Wiputh Srivahuai, Chayada Vibhatiphum, and Netiphumi Mingrajiralay.

Dr. Duangrit clarified that the group will support the party with the most votes in the recent election to lead the council, in accordance with democratic principles. When asked about alleged "secret plans," he firmly denied their existence, stating such tactics are not part of the Working Team's approach. He noted that political discussions between allies are natural, but emphasized there are no hidden schemes or backroom deals.

Addressing criticism that the group has abandoned its campaign promise to "remove politics from the council," Dr. Duangrit reiterated the group's commitment to keeping politics out of council operations. He stressed that the Working Team prioritizes work and can collaborate with anyone who shares good ideas and wants to benefit Bangkok. The group maintains it will work transparently with all parties regardless of political differences.

Government Launches Nine-Point Monsoon Preparedness Plan

Thailand's government approved a nine-point monsoon preparedness plan for 2025 to manage flooding, landslides, and drought across the country's May-October rainy season through improved forecasting, water management, and inter-agency coordi

2h ago Khaosod

The Thai government has approved a comprehensive monsoon response strategy for 2025 as proposed by the National Water Resources Committee and has directed all relevant agencies to implement it strictly, preparing for heavy rainfall, flooding, flash floods, landslides, and dry spells. Thailand typically enters its full rainy season from May 1 to October 31 each year, except for the eastern southern region which begins September 1 and ends February 28 of the following year. This year focuses on integrated coordination among all agencies, emphasizing nine critical measures to prevent and mitigate impacts from natural disasters, including climate change effects from El Niño. Flooding and dry spells significantly affect people's livelihoods, the economy, and agriculture; advance preparation, accurate warnings, and coordinated action will enable efficient management and minimize potential damage. The measures include forecasting, targeting, and early warning systems for at-risk areas, improved rain and water forecasting, hazard mapping for flooding and landslides, and enhanced early warning systems. Water management criteria across river basins will be reviewed and adjusted to match real conditions, with data coordination between agencies and crisis management plans prepared in advance. Machinery, tools, hydraulic structures, drainage systems, and personnel will be maintained on 24-hour standby, with surveys, repairs, and removal of water obstructions to improve drainage efficiency. Water barriers, dams, embankments, and levees will be inspected for safety, with contingency plans for sudden flooding. Systematic drainage will be enhanced by accelerating removal of water hyacinth and aquatic weeds and dredging channels, especially in economically important and vulnerable areas. Pre-disaster water management centers will be established with drills, shelters and evacuation areas prepared, and vulnerable groups assisted. Water collection and source development will be accelerated at the end of the rainy season for dry season reserves, with optimal management of reservoirs and groundwater. Monitoring, evaluation, and adjustment of measures, combined with public awareness-building and community network strengthening, remain essential to maximize disaster impact reduction.

Thailand Pledges $200,000 to Aid Palestinian Refugees

Thailand pledged $200,000 in five-year funding to support Palestinian refugees through the UN Relief and Works Agency, plus an additional $50,000 for emergency humanitarian assistance.

2h ago Khaosod

Thailand has pledged $200,000 in renewed multi-year funding to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) for the 2027–2031 period, reaffirming its support for Palestinian refugees.

The announcement was made by Charge d'Affaires a.i. Pawaree Xuto Chaipatiyut at the 2026 UNRWA Pledging Conference on 30 June.

In addition to the five-year commitment, Thailand also announced an extra $50,000 contribution to support UNRWA's 2026 Flash Appeal, which provides emergency humanitarian assistance to Palestinian refugees.

Speaking at the conference, Pawaree said the international community should continue providing strong political support to ensure UNRWA can carry out its mandate independently and impartially.

"Supporting UNRWA is not only a humanitarian imperative, but also an investment in dignity, stability, and hope for millions of Palestine refugees," she said.

Chadchart Wins Bangkok Governor Race in Landslide

2h ago Khaosod

Incumbent Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt won a historic landslide victory, securing re-election with a record of more than 1.44 million votes despite earlier speculation that he might not win more than a million. Chadchart won more votes than the next four closest candidates combined—in fact, their combined total amounted to less than half of what Chadchart received. This represents a clear mandate for him to use over the next four years.

When meeting Chadchart on the campaign trail just days before Election Day at a market in Bangkok's Huai Khwang district, the 60-year-old veteran politician proved personable and down-to-earth, simply encouraging voters to participate rather than pressuring them to support him. While Bangkok could have fared worse under his leadership, significant challenges remain unresolved.

Persistent issues facing the capital include PM2.5 pollution during the cool and dry season, minimal progress on rubbish separation over the past four years, and City Hall's failure to assist homeless people—a problem particularly visible along Ratchadamnoen Avenue at night. Should Chadchart exceed his accomplishments in the next four years, he could emerge as serious prime ministerial material for Thailand, though that remains distant.

Chadchart's main opposition challenger, People's Party candidate Chaiwat Sathawornwichit, suffered a disappointing third-place finish with just over 176,000 votes, despite the party's recent success winning all Bangkok MP seats in February's general election. Political analysts attribute rising public resentment toward the People's Party to its perceived arrogance and unwillingness to acknowledge mistakes, evident in controversial decisions such as appointing former junta supporter Surapol Nitikraipot as chief adviser and voting for Anutin Charnvirakul as prime minister despite strong objections from party supporters. Without heeding criticism, the party risks losing the trust of even well-intentioned supporters.

Suspect Arrested After Bombing Kills Two Malaysian Tourists

A 40-year-old man was arrested following a June 29 bombing in Tak Bai, Narathiwat that killed two Malaysian tourists when a device meant for security volunteers detonated near their vehicles instead.

2h ago Khaosod

Security forces have conducted a court-ordered search of a 40-year-old man's residence in connection with a bomb attack in Tak Bai on June 29. Two Malaysian tourists were seriously injured when the blast missed its intended target. Over 10 watches were discovered hidden in bags, and the suspect was brought in for questioning.

On July 2, authorities reported progress in the investigation of the bombing that occurred in a drainage culvert along the Saparom-Tak Bai road in the Phai Wan village area of Tak Bai district, Narathiwat province on June 29. The bomb missed its intended target and instead struck two Malaysian tourist vehicles, injuring them seriously and destroying the cars.

Major Phakvat Wansanuk, chief of Tak Bai police station, and Lieutenant Colonel Phornnurate Unyarat, deputy commander of the Third Infantry Regiment, coordinated a joint operation involving three agencies, EOD personnel, and bomb-sniffing dogs. Local leaders were invited to participate in the court-ordered search of the suspect's residence in Phai Wan sub-district.

Investigations and evidence indicated the suspect was involved in and had knowledge of the bombing. The perpetrator had detonated the device to ambush and kill personnel from the Sukhirin-Lok territorial defense volunteer unit who were returning by vehicle from a training exercise in Sa Tap sub-district, Yala province. However, the bomb missed its target and struck two Malaysian tourist vehicles instead, causing serious injuries.

Officers surrounded the residence and deployed bomb-sniffing dogs to secure the surrounding area before requesting consent to search. The homeowner cooperated with the investigation.

The initial search discovered over 10 wristwatches hidden inside bags of brown sugar placed in a corner of the bedroom, along with mechanic tools. The kitchen area contained motorcycle exhaust pipe components and numerous bags of various items.

The suspect was taken to the interrogation center at the 46th Ranger Force Command in Muang district, Narathiwat province. His possession of numerous watches and other items far exceeded what would be normal for a typical resident.

The Department aims to generate over 1 billion baht in export value through FTA utilization. Thailand currently has 14 active FTAs covering 18 countries, with three additional agreements (Thailand-EFTA, Thailand-Sri Lanka, and Thailand-Bhutan) expected to take effect by 2027, bringing the total to 17 FTAs covering 24 countries. Arada emphasized that the modern trade era leaves no room for stagnation and called on businesses to transform into Smart Traders capable of reducing costs and gaining competitive advantages through FTA benefits.
