Thai Broadcast Regulator's Chief Loses Position Over Legal Disqualification

Thailand's broadcast regulator chief has been deemed legally disqualified by the NBTC selection committee, though formal removal requires royal approval and publication in the official gazette.

Thai Broadcast Regulator's Chief Loses Position Over Legal Disqualification
18 Jul Khaosod

The NBTC selection committee unanimously voted 4-0 that Chairman Dr. Sorn Boonbaisairattana is disqualified under Section 8(2) of the Broadcasting and Telecommunications Act, meaning he has forfeited his right to serve as an NBTC commissioner under Section 18 of the Act as amended in 2022. Suphinyha Klangngarom, a former NBTC commissioner and head of the Consumer Council's communications subcommittee, argued that while Dr. Sorn may be considered ineligible from a practical standpoint, his formal removal requires royal approval and publication in the Royal Gazette. She called on Dr. Sorn to immediately cease his duties and notify the NBTC office, similar to her own previous decision when facing disqualification. Klangngarom emphasized that while Dr. Sorn may contest the decision in administrative court, he should first step down to avoid operational and financial complications for the agency. She also stressed that proper government procedure requires official documentation submitted by a responsible agency to the Prime Minister for royal endorsement, and noted that five other NBTC board members are now watching how the situation unfolds.

Medical Council to Investigate Ratchaburi Hospital Over Patient Death
18 Jul Khaosod

The Medical Council is preparing to investigate a private hospital in Ratchaburi province following the death of a 31-year-old man whose wife, a teacher, posted online demanding accountability. The woman claims her husband complained of chest pain and heavy sweating and requested a heart examination, but was not examined before being discharged. He died shortly after, sparking public criticism.

On July 18, 2026, Associate Professor Dr. Methi Wongsirsuwan, committee member and assistant secretary of the Medical Council, expressed deep sympathy for the deceased's family. He clarified that the Medical Council is responsible only for examining physicians' professional standards, while the Health Services Support Department oversees hospital standards.

Dr. Methi said the key issue under investigation is whether the physician's medical judgment in diagnosis and treatment decisions met professional standards. However, currently only one side's information has been heard, so facts from all parties must be gathered before drawing conclusions. The investigation can begin in two ways: if the family files a complaint with the Medical Council, which triggers an ethics investigation, or if the secretary-general considers the case affects professional standards or public trust without a complaint being filed.

"If the family has not yet filed a complaint, the Medical Council will closely monitor the situation and may coordinate with relevant parties to gather facts. If the case has merit, it can be accepted for consideration," Dr. Methi said.

When asked about potential misconduct if the facts match media reports, Dr. Methi said the key issue is whether the physician's exercise of professional judgment was appropriate and met standards, as well as communication and advice given to the patient and family. Inappropriate language or behavior would also be investigated. However, the determination must be based on information from all parties—the family, treating physician, and hospital—to be fair to everyone, and cannot be decided solely on media reports.

Dr. Methi advised the public that if they believe treatment is inappropriate or doubt a physician's judgment, they should report it through the hospital's complaint channels, such as the hospital inspector or administrator, immediately so treatment can be reviewed while the patient is still in care, potentially preventing serious outcomes. He also urged physicians to exercise careful judgment and consult experienced colleagues if uncertain about diagnosis or treatment to ensure patients receive appropriate, professional-standard care.

A solar battery storage system malfunctioned and exploded in a Samut Prakan carport on July 18, triggering a house fire that injured the homeowner but was contained within 20 minutes.

Solar Battery Explosions Spark House Fire in Samut Prakan
18 Jul Khaosod

Three loud explosions rattled the carport before flames engulfed the house, and the owner ran for safety. Firefighters arrived and sprayed water to contain the blaze, which is believed to have started from a solar battery storage system malfunction. At 2 p.m. on July 18, 2025, Muang Samut Prakan police received a report of a residential fire in Soi Mangkol Khandee, Praksai Nai subdistrict, in Samut Prakan province. They coordinated with Praksai Nai municipal firefighters, who dispatched two fire trucks to battle the flames.

The scene was a two-story house with smoke and flames pouring from the ground-floor carport area. Fire spread up to the carport roof and into the lower floor of the house. The homeowner suffered minor injuries but managed to evacuate with two dogs. Firefighters used two water jets and took about 20 minutes to bring the fire under control.

The homeowner reported hearing three successive explosions from the carport—where solar battery storage was installed—before seeing intense flames and immediately fleeing to call for help. Neighbors and nearby residents confirmed hearing sounds similar to battery explosions multiple times before the fire ignited in the carport and rapidly spread into the house. They suspect the cause to be a short-circuit in the solar battery storage system, and officials will conduct further investigation to determine the exact cause.

Regarding the deadly Ladprao bar fire, Ingfa expressed sincere condolences to the deceased and their families, hoping the tragedy will prompt greater awareness of safety standards in entertainment venues. She stressed the importance of checking emergency exits and escape routes whenever entering any establishment, and noted that many entertainment venues have since released safety awareness clips featuring sprinkler systems.

Former Millionaire Sells All Assets to Care for 2,000 Stray Dogs and Cats

Former Millionaire Sells All Assets to Care for 2,000 Stray Dogs and Cats
18 Jul Khaosod

Ya Tim, a 76-year-old former millionaire, has dedicated her life to operating Baan Nang Fah, an animal sanctuary caring for over 2,000 stray dogs and 400 cats. After a Facebook post showing her selling gold frames went viral with a caption about her sacrifice, she and her 37-year-old son opened up about their mission and financial struggles. Their primary income now comes from donations and selling personal assets—homes, gold, and valuables—because they cannot abandon the animals. Monthly expenses exceed 400,000 baht with no other revenue source.

Tim explained that before taking in strays, she did not accept donations. When her husband was alive, his business funded the sanctuary, but he died in 2021. A former employee of his then embezzled over 32 tractors and repair equipment valued at more than 10 million baht, crippling the business. Tim filed a complaint with police in Prachuap Khiri Khan Province but has pursued it no further after making ten trips and never meeting the defendant. She abandoned the case, worn down by travel costs and with no legal resources, choosing instead to focus on caring for the animals.

Despite years passing, Tim still hopes for justice and recovery of the stolen funds, but she lacks the means to hire a lawyer or the time to fight. Financial problems compounded after the theft: lawsuits, property seizures, and bank debt followed. All donations go to the animals, forcing her to sell possessions to pay debts. When asked if she holds hope for justice, Tim said she doubts the thief still has the money, suspecting it was spent or transferred to relatives long ago.

Thailand Vows to Open Western China Market With Sichuan

Thailand Vows to Open Western China Market With Sichuan
18 Jul Khaosod

Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul met with Wang Xiaohui, Communist Party Secretary of Sichuan Province, at the Chengdu Century City Convention Center on July 18, 2025. Both sides agreed to elevate cooperation in trade, investment, science, technology, innovation, tourism, and local-level partnerships to tangibly connect Thailand's economy with western China's market. Wang noted that Thailand is strategically important to Sichuan, which maintains sister-city relationships with five Thai provinces and sees growing numbers of Thai tourists annually. Bilateral trade between Thailand and Sichuan reached approximately 41 billion yuan in 2025, a 112 percent increase, reflecting rapid economic growth. Sichuan also hosts the most Thai restaurants in western China, demonstrating strong demand for Thai food and culture, which can be leveraged to boost Thai agricultural exports, food products, and service industries. Prime Minister Anutin emphasized the importance of his official visit to three major cities—Shanghai, Chengdu, and Beijing—and his meeting with President Xi Jinping to reaffirm Thailand's readiness to strengthen bilateral cooperation across all levels, from central government to provinces, cities, and the private sector. He praised China's western development strategy, particularly Sichuan's emergence as a regional economic, transportation, science, technology, and innovation hub with over 80 million people. Sichuan represents both a large market for Thai goods and a source of quality investors Thailand seeks to engage more closely. Thailand has maintained a consulate general in Chengdu for over 20 years and formally opened a Board of Investment (BOI) office there, which will serve as a key mechanism for providing information, facilitating services, and connecting Chinese investors with investment opportunities in Thailand. The Chengdu BOI office will attract investments in target industries such as electric vehicles, electronics, digital technology, advanced technology, clean energy, and future industries, creating jobs, upgrading Thai labor skills, transferring technology, and strengthening the country's production base. The Prime Minister assured Chinese businesses already investing or planning to expand in Thailand that the Thai government will support and facilitate their operations within legal frameworks and national interests. More than 150 Thai business executives and entrepreneurs participated in economic activities in Chengdu, demonstrating Thai business interest in western China's market potential and providing opportunities to find business partners, develop distribution channels, and build new business networks. Spokesperson Ratchada noted that this visit will open new markets for Thai goods and services, attract investment, and advance technology transfer.

Thailand Orders Urgent Safety Inspections of All Bars Nationwide
18 Jul Khaosod

After the devastating fire at a Ladprao beer hall claimed 33 lives and injured numerous others, questions are mounting: why do authorities allow such tragedies to repeat? Officials have issued stern crackdowns and sweeping inspections following the incident, but critics worry these efforts will fade within weeks, as happened after previous disasters.

The latest tragedy echoes two infamous nightclub fires: Santitham Pub in 2009, which killed 67 people, and Mountain B in Sattahip, Chachoengsao, four years ago, which killed 24. All three shared identical flaws—improper construction, inadequate fire exits, non-functional sprinkler systems, and crowded escape routes.

Authorities must now conduct rigorous, nationwide inspections of all bars and pubs, regardless of size or tier. Every emergency exit must be checked for visibility and accessibility. Any venue found in violation must cease operations immediately until repairs are complete. All existing licenses must be reissued only after thorough re-evaluation.

Both officials and venue owners must demonstrate genuine commitment to safety. Authorities must enforce standards without compromise, and business operators must prioritize public welfare over profits. Only then can further loss of life be prevented.

Police Arrest Monk in Romance Scam That Netted Hundreds of Thousands

Police Arrest Monk in Romance Scam That Netted Hundreds of Thousands
18 Jul Khaosod

On July 18, 2025, police arrested Phra Suriya, also known as Suriyan, 65, at a well-known temple in Bangkok's Jatujak district on the strength of a criminal court warrant issued May 7, 2025. The case stems from 2024, when a victim was contacted via a mobile app by a scammer posing as a foreign singer. The suspect built a romantic relationship with the victim through what is known as a romance scam, then claimed to be sending gifts but said he faced expenses and needed money transferred to designated accounts multiple times. Total losses exceeded 200,000 baht.

After discovering the fraud, the victim filed a report at Bueng Kum Police Station. Investigators found that one of the receiving bank accounts belonged to Suriyan, obtained a court warrant, and discovered he had fled by ordaining as a monk at a temple in Jatujak. During questioning, Suriyan confessed to all charges. He claimed that in 2566 while working and living in the Huai Lampong area, a man named Bom—whose real name and surname are unknown—convinced him to open two bank accounts in exchange for 300 baht in wages and one meal. Suriyan handed over both accounts to Bom, later attempted to recover them but was unsuccessful and lost contact. He decided to ordain as a monk three years ago.

Authorities conducted a laicization ceremony before transferring him to Bueng Kum Police Station investigators. He faces charges of abetting fraud by impersonation, assisting in computer fraud, and knowingly allowing others to use his bank accounts, savings account cards, or electronic payment accounts. Legal proceedings continue.

Thailand Accelerates Infrastructure Gaps to Boost Landbridge Plan

Thailand is accelerating infrastructure projects to support its Landbridge strategy, with the government prioritizing port upgrades in Ranong and rail connections across the country over the next five years.

Thailand Accelerates Infrastructure Gaps to Boost Landbridge Plan
18 Jul Khaosod

Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has revised the government's Landbridge strategy based on private sector input, pledging to accelerate the completion of missing transportation links and rail connections while immediately upgrading ports on both coasts. Speaking in Chengdu at a time difference of one hour ahead of Thailand, Anutin told reporters that the Landbridge remains a government policy under study, but the priority now is to urgently connect existing infrastructure gaps and railway systems. He noted that Thailand's central location in ASEAN and unique ability to link with other nations by both land and sea make these connections critical.

When asked whether the western port would be developed first, the Prime Minister confirmed that the government will begin by upgrading the deep-water port in Ranong to connect with Chumphon and terrestrial logistics systems, enabling links with neighboring countries. The Transport Ministry is conducting parallel studies to assess value and optimal investment timing to maximize long-term national benefit.

Earlier, during a luncheon with over 150 Thai private sector executives, Anutin told business leaders to look ahead with confidence. He revealed that private sector representatives, including heads of industry associations, banks, and chambers of commerce, had previously requested that the government prioritize connecting existing infrastructure gaps, completing rail links to both the western and eastern regions, and upgrading the two southern ports—stating this alone would be sufficient for investment prospects over the next 5-10 years. The Prime Minister emphasized that the Landbridge would take 3-5 years even without opposition, whereas port upgrades, rail connections, and road completions can proceed immediately. He assured investors that the government is listening and will provide every necessary support, assuring them that Thailand has adequate infrastructure and remains a competitive investment destination.

Court Orders Bank to Repay Charlotte Austin 1 Million Baht

A court has ordered a bank to repay Charlotte Austin 1 million baht after she fell victim to a call center fraud that cost her over 4 million baht, though the money has not yet arrived pending possible appeal.

Court Orders Bank to Repay Charlotte Austin 1 Million Baht
18 Jul Khaosod

Charlotte Austin has received good news after a lengthy legal fight: the civil court has ordered a bank to repay her 1 million baht stemming from a call center fraud case in which she lost over 4 million baht. On July 18, Austin appeared at the IMPACT SPEED FEST 2026 at IMPACT Challenger Hall in Muang Thonburi and discussed the case.

When asked if she had received the refund, Austin said the money has not yet arrived. She explained that regardless of profession or status, anyone who falls victim to injustice has the right to hire a lawyer and pursue legal action, and that the court ultimately decides the case. She has been in contact with her lawyer since the incident and followed all proper legal procedures, bearing all attorney fees herself. The case has taken nearly two years of fighting, involving coordination with police to file documents with the court. "When the court issued its judgment, I was happy," she said.

Asked if she was satisfied with the time and effort invested, Austin said she was pleased. She initially did not expect to recover any money—her main goal was to catch those responsible for the fraud. The criminal case resulted in charges against four defendants, with sentences of 6–7 years imprisonment. The court ordered full repayment of 4 million baht, but after consulting her lawyer, it was determined that the bank shared negligence, so the court awarded her 1 million baht instead.

Regarding the remaining 3 million baht, Austin said recovery depends on a separate case where police are gathering evidence against higher-level suspects. If that investigation succeeds and assets are seized, the compensation may be distributed among all victims, though she may not receive the full amount. She remains willing to fight on with her lawyer's support.

On when she will actually receive the money, Austin noted that it depends on whether the bank appeals the decision. If an appeal is filed, the process will take longer and require further legal action. She acknowledged that the nearly two-year legal process has taught her much about the law and that even recovering 1 million baht from an initial 4 million baht loss is something. Austin encouraged others in similar situations to report to police, consult with cyber police, hire a lawyer, and tell the truth in court, leaving the outcome to the judicial system.
