Thailand Fast-Tracks Investment In Missing Transport Links

Thailand is fast-tracking investment in missing transport links, including rail and road connections, to reduce logistics costs and strengthen its role as a regional trade hub amid global shipping uncertainties.

Thailand Fast-Tracks Investment In Missing Transport Links
22 Jul Khaosod

On July 22, 2026, government spokesperson Ratchada Thanadirek revealed that Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has directed relevant agencies to review the Land Bridge development plan and accelerate investment in immediately executable infrastructure projects, particularly filling gaps in incomplete transport networks—both rail and road systems—to enhance shipping efficiency, trade, and investment.

The Prime Minister noted that Thailand holds a geographic advantage as a regional hub, and completing missing transport links would accelerate cargo movement, reduce logistics costs, strengthen competitiveness, and attract investment without waiting for large-scale projects to finish. Government officials emphasized that global shipping uncertainties, particularly stemming from Middle East conflicts, reinforce the need for seamlessly connected multimodal transport networks—road, rail, sea, and air—to ensure long-term supply chain security.

A key government priority is filling Missing Links along the North–South Economic Corridor connecting China, Laos, Thailand, Malaysia, and Singapore. During discussions with China's Premier, the Thai PM expressed intent to accelerate rail connections from Chiang Khong District in Chiang Rai Province to Nathy in Laos and onward to Mohan in China, creating a complete regional rail network to improve freight transport and strengthen international trade capacity.

For immediate implementation, the government will develop Ranong Port and link it to Chumphon via rail and road systems to offer alternative shipping routes between the Indian Ocean and the Gulf of Thailand. Officials will assess feasibility, investment models, and economic returns before determining next steps. "The government prioritizes practical, quick-impact investments that tangibly benefit people and businesses," Ratchada stated. "Filling transport gaps will reduce logistics costs, expand trade and investment opportunities, and elevate Thailand's role as a regional connectivity hub while studying large-scale projects for maximum national benefit."

TAT Designates Ubon Candle Procession Signature Event

Thailand's Tourism Authority has designated the 125th Ubon Ratchathani Candle Procession (July 25–31) as a Signature Thailand Event, combining Buddhist traditions with modern light shows and interactive crafts to boost international tourism

22 Jul TAT Newsroom

Bangkok, 22 July 2026 – The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), in collaboration with Ubon Ratchathani Province and partners across the public and private sectors, is elevating the 125th-anniversary edition of the Ubon Ratchathani Candle Procession to a Signature Thailand Event. Held from 25–31 July at Thung Si Mueang, with the main programme taking place from 28–30 July, the festival preserves its time-honoured traditions while introducing new presentation and participatory elements to expand its international appeal.

Rooted in the Buddhist Lent tradition of candle offering, the procession has evolved into a major expression of faith, craftsmanship and local identity. Its longevity reflects the collective contribution of temple communities, candle masters, educational institutions, residents, government agencies and other stakeholders committed to preserving and passing on specialised skills.

Ms. Thapanee Kiatphaibool, TAT Governor, said, “The Ubon Ratchathani Candle Procession has earned its standing through the faith, craftsmanship and collective effort behind it. TAT is giving this living heritage a stronger platform by pairing its cultural foundations with contemporary presentation and meaningful participation. This will broaden international awareness, encourage longer stays and channel greater tourism value to local communities, artisans and businesses.”

The Ubon Ratchathani Candle Procession is one of three homegrown traditions TAT is elevating as Signature Thailand Events, alongside the Nakhon Phanom Illuminated Boat Procession and the Christmas Star Parade in Sakon Nakhon. Together, they support TAT’s strategy to bring distinctive regional celebrations to wider international audiences and strengthen Thailand’s cultural soft power.

As part of this approach, TAT is spotlighting the main venue at Thung Si Mueang from 25–31 July through lighting installations designed to create a more distinctive setting. On 29 and 30 July, TAT will stage four light-and-sound performances each evening, combining tradition with contemporary storytelling rooted in Ubon Ratchathani’s heritage.

Two large-scale three-dimensional sculptures of ‘Nong Mamuang’, a popular Thai cartoon character, will form an illuminated landmark at Lan Thian Chaloem Phra Kiat, from 23 July–13 August. Reimagined in contemporary Thai dress, one reclines while the other strikes a classical Thai dance pose. The installations combine traditional motifs with modern pop culture, reflecting the province’s identity as the “City of Beautiful Lotuses”.

TAT’s ART SPACE, open from 25–30 July, will offer hands-on activities based on local knowledge and craftsmanship, including candle carving, wax-flower making and gold-leaf decoration, encouraging visitors to engage with local crafts.

The main events take place from 28–30 July, beginning with the Candle Gathering on 28 July. A total of 47 elaborate pieces — one showcase candle and 46 competition entries — will represent Ubon Ratchathani’s three principal candle-making categories: traditional, moulded-wax and carved-wax.

On 29 July, the royally bestowed Buddhist Lent candle and monastic bathing cloth will be taken in procession from 08.29, followed by a candle parade, dance troupes, and folk cultural performances. The official opening on 30 July will also begin at 08.29, followed by another candle parade, dance troupes and the Phanom Phra boat procession from Surat Thani.

Across both days, more than 37 dance troupes involving temple communities and educational institutions throughout the province will take part. More than 5,000 complimentary seats will be available at five viewing points: Wat Si Ubon Rattanaram, Lan Khwan Mueang, U Hotel, Siam Commercial Bank and Bangchak service station.

Evening highlights on 29 July include the “Amazing Light of Isan: Stunned” light-and-sound production and illuminated candle displays, beginning at 19.00 at Wat Si Ubon Rattanaram and Lan Khwan Mueang. On 30 July, candle competition awards will be presented at 17.30, followed at 19.00 by a light-and-sound programme featuring a candle procession at both venues.

Award-winning candles will remain on display from 31 July–1 August at Thung Si Mueang and the City Pillar Shrine.

The wider programme includes visits to nine temple communities from 13–27 July, where visitors can learn about wax decoration. From 27 July–1 August, the “Candle Road of Dharma” event at the cultural plaza near Ubon Ratchathani City Pillar Shrine will feature candle making alongside local and One Tambon One Product markets.

Additional highlights include the “Stories of Ubon Ratchathani” light-and-sound performance at Lan Thian Chaloem Phra Kiat, on 31 July and 1 August at 18.00; the “Ganesha Barami UNSEEN” illuminated candle-flower field at Ubon Ratchathani Zoo from 25–31 July, from 16.30–20.00, with daytime viewing from 25–30 August, from 09.00–16.30; and “Ubon Candles on View Throughout the Month” at Wat Phra That Nong Bua from 3–17 August.

Lawmaker Tailed by Suspicious Vehicle at Bangkok Airport

An MP from Narathiwat reports being tailed by a white Honda City driven by a Thai Navy officer as he left Bangkok's Don Mueang Airport on July 19, four months after an armed attack on his home.

Lawmaker Tailed by Suspicious Vehicle at Bangkok Airport
22 Jul Khaosod

On July 21, 2024, the investigation team for MP Kamlasak Leevamao of Narathiwat's security detailed ongoing developments following an attack in March when armed naval personnel fired on his residence in Ba Jae district. Four months later, surveillance continues. On July 19, while traveling to Bangkok, Kamlasak reported departing Narathiwat Airport and arriving at Don Mueang between 12:30 and 1:50 p.m. His team observed two men with short cropped hair inside the terminal, then spotted a white Honda City with flashing lights parked nearby. When his convoy departed, the white sedan followed closely, with the driver appearing to match the men seen inside. When Kamlasak's team tried to block the vehicle, it refused to be passed until Vibhavadi Rangsit Road, where he ordered acceleration to escape and had staff photograph the car.

"Once we left the airport, he wouldn't let us pass. The distance was short but he refused. When it got suspicious on Vibhavadi Road, we realized something was wrong. The team photographed the vehicle while still at the airport," Kamlasak explained. License plate verification confirmed the vehicle belonged to a junior officer (Second Lieutenant) in the Royal Thai Navy stationed at Sattahip Naval Base. Further investigation revealed the officer had previously been assigned to Border Security Operations Command Region 4 Forward in Thailand's southern border provinces.

Kamlasak stated he has not yet filed a police report but will exercise greater caution and consult his party before further action. When asked if this was staged or coincidental, he firmly disagreed: "It's too much of a coincidence. Coincidence from the moment we left, then a Sattahip plate, the driver being a naval officer, and him having worked with Region 4 Forward operations." He concluded by asking the vehicle owner and officer involved to come forward immediately and clarify if they were not involved in the surveillance, urging them to prove their innocence.

Heat Wave Drives Thai Air Conditioner Exports to Europe Up 40%

Thailand's air conditioner exports to Europe jumped 40.7% in May 2025 as an early heat wave drove urgent restocking ahead of summer, with heat pump systems and components seeing particularly strong gains across Northern European markets.

Heat Wave Drives Thai Air Conditioner Exports to Europe Up 40%
22 Jul Khaosod

Thailand's air conditioner and component exports to Europe surged 40.7% in May 2025, reaching $148.6 million—the highest in seven months—driven by an unusually severe and early heat wave across the continent. Nanthapong Jiralertpongse, director of the Office of Trade and Commercial Strategy at the Commerce Ministry, revealed that the spike reflects strong demand as European importers and retailers rushed to stock inventory ahead of the summer peak. Over the first five months of 2025, total air conditioner exports to Europe reached $783.9 million (approximately 250 billion baht), up 18.9%, with heat pump systems growing 70.6%, air conditioner components expanding 49.6%, and window-mounted models rising 21.6%.

Germany leads as the top export market with $30.8 million in exports, up 89.6%, followed by France (up 50.9%), the United Kingdom (up 58.2%), and Spain (up 42.2%). Northern European markets are showing even stronger gains, with Finland expanding 366.6% and Sweden jumping 177.3%, reflecting structural market shifts where only about 20% of European households currently own air conditioners, well below the global household average of 37% in 2022.

Looking ahead, demand for air conditioners in Europe is expected to remain strong through the third quarter as the continent faces a fresh, more intense heat wave beginning late June, with temperatures in many countries approaching 40°C. The World Meteorological Organization forecasts above-normal temperatures across Europe from July through September 2025, particularly in Southern and Central Europe, driven by intensifying El Niño conditions. However, growth in the European market remains subject to strict environmental policy conditions, prompting Thai manufacturers to focus on energy-efficient, high-performance air conditioners and heat pump systems that align with EU energy and carbon-reduction policies while closely monitoring increasingly stringent environmental regulations.

Deputy PM Defends Premier's Song Performance as Apolitical

Deputy PM Seehasak defends PM Anutin's singing performance at a China state reception as apolitical, saying music should unite rather than divide, and urging people not to politicize the event.

Deputy PM Defends Premier's Song Performance as Apolitical
22 Jul Khaosod

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Seehasak Puangketkeao on July 22 addressed the controversy surrounding Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul singing "Tian Mi Mi" at an official reception during his recent state visit to China. Speaking in Manila on July 21 at 9:30 p.m. local time, Seehasak said he observed the reception atmosphere was positive and festive. He personally believes music should transcend politics and should not be weaponized for political gain. The premier's China visit proved successful, with meetings held with Chinese President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Qiang, plus a business seminar attended by around 150 Thai private sector representatives.

Seehasak stressed that the song itself should not become a political issue. He noted that if there were diplomatic sensitivities, the Chinese orchestra would not have performed it. Everyone at the reception was enjoying themselves, he added. "Perhaps because everyone knows this song, nobody thinks of politics at all. The song has existed for decades. Sometimes we shouldn't make it a political matter because it will overshadow the success of the visit and the benefits Thailand will gain. It becomes unnecessary drama," he said.

When asked whether China invited the premier to sing, Seehasak explained that the Chinese side knew the premier enjoys singing and had to consider which song would appeal to guests—even Chinese citizens sing this song. He framed music as a tool to reduce conflict and build unity. Seehasak urged people to view the event factually and stressed there was no political intent behind the performance and no intention to support any particular faction. He called for setting aside political considerations in such situations.

When Should You Take Cholesterol-Lowering Drugs?
22 Jul Khaosod

On July 22, 2025, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Surathn Tanpravet, a neurologist and brain specialist at Chiang Mai University's Faculty of Medicine, provided information about cholesterol-lowering medication and when patients should take it.

During his medical career treating stroke, heart disease, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol, Dr. Tanpravet identified two groups of people with elevated blood cholesterol: those eager to take medication out of fear of disease, and those reluctant to take medication who first attempt lifestyle changes. Some view medication as harmful, leading to anti-statin groups, but cholesterol-lowering drugs are highly effective when used appropriately for the right patients based on individual risk.

When asked "Do I need cholesterol medication and at what level should I start?", Dr. Tanpravet explained that looking only at LDL (bad cholesterol) levels is insufficient. The 2026 guidelines from the American College of Cardiology and American Heart Association (ACC/AHA) have shifted from treating based on LDL numbers to treating based on individual cardiovascular risk. The goal is not simply to lower blood cholesterol numbers, but to reduce the risk of heart attack, stroke, and premature death.

LDL cholesterol accumulates in artery walls, forming atherosclerotic plaques that thicken over time, narrowing blood vessels. If these plaques rupture, they trigger sudden blood clots, causing heart attacks, strokes, or peripheral artery disease. Lowering LDL is one of the most effective prevention methods.

Statin medications work by inhibiting the HMG-CoA reductase enzyme, the primary enzyme responsible for cholesterol production in the liver. As cholesterol production decreases, the liver increases LDL receptors, allowing more LDL to be removed from the bloodstream, reducing LDL levels by 30-60% depending on the medication type and dose.

Beyond cholesterol reduction, statins have "pleiotropic effects" or additional benefits including reducing artery wall inflammation, stabilizing fatty plaques to prevent rupture, improving blood vessel lining function, reducing certain blood clots, and slowing atherosclerotic disease progression.

Nameless Camp: Hillside Dream Transformed Into Nature Retreat

Sam and Um transformed a hillside orchard in Chiang Mai into Nameless Camp, a nature retreat featuring glamping domes and eight mountain-view rooms where guests pick fresh vegetables and experience authentic cool-weather escapes year-round.

Nameless Camp: Hillside Dream Transformed Into Nature Retreat
22 Jul Khaosod

Camp mai mee chue began as a simple dream by Sam and Um to convert a small hillside in Pong Yaeng village, Mae Rim district, Chiang Mai, into a quiet retreat where people could escape the chaos and reconnect with nature. The land once held a lychee and longan orchard belonging to Um's father, along with a small rice mill that was the heart of family life. Though time has passed, the rice mill has been preserved and now tells the story of the place's history.

The camp's humble beginning started with a Volkswagen Beetle converted into a rooftop tent, offering visitors a unique camping experience. Gradually, glamping-style dome tents were added and warmly welcomed by both Thai and international travelers.

Encouraged by visitors, Camp mai mee chue evolved into the cozy resort it is today. Currently offering eight rooms, each with full mountain views, the camp provides early mornings with fresh air, bird songs, and during rainy season, mist rolling through the valley. Winter temperatures drop to around 7 degrees Celsius, attracting many visitors seeking authentic cool weather experiences. The resort also features a small vegetable garden where guests can pick fresh produce to cook their own meals—a simple activity connecting people to nature and a simpler way of life.

Over the past seven years, Camp mai mee chue has welcomed Thai and international tourists, as well as artists, actors, and celebrities who return regularly. What draws people back is not just the beautiful mountain views, but the warm, familiar feeling and rare sense of peace found here.

Located in Pong Yaeng village, Mae Rim district, Chiang Mai, approximately 40 kilometers from Chiang Mai International Airport (45-50 minutes' drive), the camp is accessed via Highway 1096 and is easily reached year-round.

Sometimes the best rest is not traveling the farthest, but spending time in a place where your heart can truly find peace.
