Doctors Warn: Five 'Healthy' Habits That May Cause Chronic Disease
Medical experts warn that five supposedly healthy habits—including eliminating all carbs, overtraining, taking excessive supplements, eating only egg whites, and detox fasting—can actually increase chronic disease risk when taken to extreme
Doctors warn that five behaviors many people believe are beneficial to health can actually increase the risk of chronic illness if done incorrectly or in excess. Dr. Mitch Gene, chief medical officer of a leading specialized and comprehensive medical laboratory in the United States, cautions that certain habits viewed as "healthy" may cause long-term health damage when taken to extremes.
The first risky behavior is complete carbohydrate elimination. While reducing carbs can help control weight and blood sugar, cutting carbs entirely may deprive the body of essential energy and nutrients from fruits, whole grains, and certain vegetables. Doctors note that the Mediterranean diet—recognized as beneficial for the heart, brain, and reducing diabetes and cancer risk—still includes carbohydrates as a key component. Taking excessive supplements unnecessarily can also cause nutrient competition for absorption or dangerous interactions.
Overtraining is another concern. While regular exercise is beneficial, intense, prolonged workouts may increase inflammation and oxidative stress in the body, slow recovery, increase injury risk, and research in 2025 found that marathon runners may face increased colorectal cancer risk. Eating only egg whites provides protein but misses crucial nutrients found in yolks, such as choline and vitamins A, D, E, and K—essential for brain, memory, muscle, liver, and skin, hair, and nail health.
Finally, detox juice fasting is ineffective. The body already has a natural waste-elimination system through the liver, kidneys, intestines, and brain. Adequate water intake, fiber-rich fruits and vegetables, regular exercise, and quality sleep are safer and more effective ways to support the body's natural detoxification than fasting or detox juices alone. The best approach to health is balanced eating and avoiding extreme practices.
