Transport Ministry Eyes Private Investment To Accelerate Mega Projects
Thailand's Transport Ministry is seeking private investment to speed up major infrastructure projects, with officials emphasizing that state budgets alone could take 20 years to complete large-scale transportation networks.
Deputy Prime Minister and Transport Minister Pipat Ratchakitprakarn announced that the ministry is engaging private sector investment to accelerate major transportation projects during a workshop launch titled "MOT New Chapter: Modern, People-Focused" on July 8, 2025. The workshop aims to translate policy into concrete action plans with the primary goal of maximizing public benefit and driving overall economic growth.
Infrastructure development cannot be completed within short timeframes of 3-6 months or one year, requiring instead the integration of multiple components into a large-scale national network connected internationally. The workshop brings together all agencies' policies in coordinated and unified direction.
Work is divided into five main groups: land transport, road transport, rail transport, water transport, and air transport. All five groups must gather input covering both "public travel" and "commercial cargo transport" while aligning with four key policy areas: reducing public expenses and improving safety, stimulating economy and investment, promoting clean energy in public transport, and establishing future transportation infrastructure.
Ratchakitprakarn emphasized that agencies must look ahead to medium-term (3-5 years) and long-term (10-20 years) plans to advance major and quick-win projects in 2025-2026. The Transport and Traffic Policy and Planning Office will consolidate and monitor progress. The minister highlighted the budget challenge: relying solely on state budgets could require 20 years for large projects. Therefore, mobilizing capital from external sources and the private sector is critical to accelerate network construction within faster timelines.
The workshop results will be compiled and presented on July 13, 2025, for Transport Ministry executives to review and provide feedback before conversion into a comprehensive action plan for concrete policy implementation, ultimately improving public quality of life and driving sustainable economic growth.
