Thailand Seeks Indonesia's Help to Resolve Southern Border Unrest

Thailand's PM Anutin visited Indonesia to seek help resolving escalating violence in the southern border region, where recent attacks have killed soldiers and police and suspended peace talks.

Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul completed an official visit to Indonesia on August 3-4, 2025, at the invitation of Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto. This was the first visit by a Thai Prime Minister to Indonesia in 15 years, following a similar introductory visit by former PM Yingluck Shinawatra.

Before departing, Anutin outlined the visit's objectives, which include strengthening bilateral relations, economic cooperation, and security matters—particularly collaboration on Thailand's southern border conflict. The southern region has experienced a resurgence of violence, beginning with a car bombing at a hotel in Muang district, Narathiwat, followed by an insurgent attack that killed five ranger soldiers at a checkpoint in Ranaengae district, and most recently the shooting deaths of two police officers in Takbai district. Military forces have declared martial law across Narathiwat province to expand authority for search operations and apprehend those responsible.

These escalating incidents have forced a suspension of ongoing peace talks, with no confirmed date for negotiations to resume. For years, Malaysia has served as a facilitator in Thailand's efforts to resolve the southern conflict. This time, Indonesia—a regional power with the world's largest Muslim population whose identity and beliefs align with Thailand's southern population—may play a similar role. Indonesia's experience resolving its own long-running Aceh conflict, which ended in peace, suggests potential value in its involvement. The key question is how Anutin's visit will establish cooperation with Indonesia to help bring peace to Thailand's troubled south and extinguish the ongoing unrest.
