Thaksin’s Amnesty Plea Under Review by Thai Subcommittee
Thaksin Shinawatra’s legal team has submitted a petition for amnesty and to clear his name to the Committee for Promoting Social Peace and Harmony. The petition is now under review by a subcommittee chaired by the Justice Ministry’s permanent secretary, which will consider it alongside similar requests under a 180‑day legal timeframe. Committee secretary Chatrchai Bangchwad said the subcommittee needs to examine the details and consult the full committee before determining whether the plea meets the legal criteria.
Speaking at the Government House at 09:20 a.m., Chatrchai explained that the petition is currently with the subcommittee for screening, chaired by the Justice Ministry permanent secretary, and that further details are being examined. He said the request will be processed together with other similar petitions, and the timeline for deliberation will be discussed with the Justice Ministry secretary. According to law, the review period is 180 days, which can be extended twice, but the initial period is set at 180 days. When asked whether he viewed the petition as meeting the amnesty criteria, Chatrchai said the decision rests with the committee, as the case involves multiple legal points.
