Tragedy struck when a mother fell asleep during the day and her one-and-a-half-year-old son woke up, wandered off, and fell into a canal adjacent to their worker camp accommodation. The child's body was later found caught in bamboo in the Bang Lang Son canal, resulting in his death on October 25, 2026.
On that date, Pol. Lt. Col. Athit Thong-anun, Deputy Inspector of Investigation at Chalong Police Station, received a report from the Chalong Police Radio Center about a child missing after falling into water near a worker camp adjacent to the Bang Lang Son canal, in Soi Nak, a sub-soi of Soi Sanguan Nam, Moo 5, Chalong Subdistrict, Mueang Phuket District, Phuket Province. He informed Pol. Lt. Col. Surasak Jaidee, Superintendent of Chalong Police Station, and coordinated with rescue workers to search for the child.
Upon questioning, Ms. Chichune, a Myanmar national and the child's mother, stated that before the incident she and her son were resting in their room. She fell asleep around 1:00 PM and when she woke up, her son was gone. She searched but could not find him. At the time, heavy rain was falling and the canal water level had risen, leading her to believe her son had slipped into the canal beside their accommodation. She then alerted authorities to investigate and organize a search.
Around 2:00 PM, officials found the body of the boy, Wanchai, aged 1 year and 6 months, stuck in bamboo within the Bang Lang Son canal in the Moo 4 area behind the Tak Daet village in Chalong Subdistrict. They recovered the body from the water but confirmed the child had already died.
Initially, officials coordinated with a forensic doctor to examine the body before sending it to Vachira Phuket Hospital for further legal procedures.
