Tragic End for Legendary Wild Elephant 'Mua' Shot Dead in Mysterious Circumstances at Khao Khichakut

Chanthaburi—The legendary wild elephant Palai Kor Kaew, known affectionately to locals as 'Mua', has been found shot dead in mysterious circumstances near a pond at the edge of an orchard in Khlong Plu subdistrict, Khao Khichakut District. The 30-year-old male elephant, distinguished by tusks exceeding 80 centimeters, bore at least six gunshot wounds across its ears, chest, abdomen, and front legs. On May 25, 2569, Chawinpat Pinkaew, director of Khao Khichakut National Park, arrived with police investigator Yottha Cherdchuchon and a veterinary team to examine the carcass and collect evidence.

Initial investigations revealed multiple bullet wounds suggesting the use of firearms. Authorities have begun searching for evidence at the scene to identify the shooter. The elephant's body was transported to the park office for a detailed necropsy to determine the exact cause of death.

This tragic incident underscores a persistent conflict between humans and wild elephants in Chanthaburi and the Khao Yai Wildlife Sanctuary. Palai Kor Kaew was known for its unpredictable and sometimes aggressive behavior, making it feared by local residents. The broader problem stems from an increasing wild elephant population and inadequate food sources in the forest, forcing elephants to raid agricultural areas and leading to violent confrontations.

While authorities have attempted to manage the situation through surveillance and intervention, the death of this iconic elephant serves as a critical warning that patience between humans and wildlife in the region is wearing dangerously thin. Without sustainable long-term solutions beyond mere enforcement, such losses of wildlife—symbols of nature itself—may become an endless cycle.
