Prisoner Dies from Monkeypox at Thonburi Detention Center
On February 14, 2024, Dr. Montian Kanasawat, Director-General of the Department of Disease Control, reported the death of a 44-year-old male prisoner from Mpox (monkeypox). The patient had multiple underlying conditions including HIV, hepatitis B and C, and syphilis, with compromised immunity that made the disease more severe. Investigation revealed the patient entered prison on January 20, 2024, with leg wounds, later developing fever and body rashes. Despite urgent medical treatment, his condition deteriorated, and he died on February 11, 2024. Laboratory tests confirmed Mpox Clade II infection. Authorities have implemented strict prevention measures, including isolating and monitoring 32 close contacts in the same prison ward and an additional 14 contacts in related areas. They have halted prisoner transfers in high-risk areas, conducted twice-daily temperature checks, performed extensive environmental cleaning, and managed infectious waste according to strict standards. Medical officials are tracking contacts, especially healthcare workers, and providing post-exposure vaccination to 19 high-risk individuals. They emphasize that monkeypox spreads through close contact with rashes, lesions, or patient secretions. Currently, no additional cases have been detected, and the situation remains under close monitoring.
