PM Anuthins Dismisses Opposition Over Court Ruling on 400B Bailout

Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul gave an interview at Don Muang military airport on July 9, 2025, addressing the Constitutional Court's ruling on the constitutionality of a 400 billion baht emergency decree designed to manage the nation's energy crisis and transition. He emphasized that the government must respect the court's decision, which is binding on all state agencies, and said they would wait for the verdict.

When asked if he was prepared to take immediate action regardless of the court's outcome while traveling to Malaysia, Anutin replied there was no need for hasty orders—only to wait for the ruling and comply with it.

Regarding opposition calls for his accountability if the court rules against the decree, Anutin asked who specifically was demanding this. Learning it was the opposition, he questioned which opposition member, noting there are over 100 of them.

When reporters clarified it was Natthapon Rueangpanya, leader of the Democrat Party, Anutin laughed and asked, "Who is Natthapon?" After reporters answered "Khun Taeng" (his nickname), Anutin replied, "Oh, the leader." When informed that Natthapon had stated Anutin should resign if there was serious wrongdoing, the PM again asked dismissively, "Who is he?" before acknowledging he understood the opposition leader's position.

UK Promises Extra Bank Holiday If England Wins World Cup
7h ago Khaosod

UK interim Prime Minister Keir Starmer has stated that if England's national football team wins the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the government would declare an additional public holiday. England has qualified for the semi-finals of the 2026 World Cup, where they will face Norway on July 12 at 4:00 AM Thai time. The Three Lions have not reached a World Cup final since their home victory in 1966, which remains their sole final appearance. Starmer recently indicated that an extra bank holiday might be announced should England claim the World Cup title. "Regarding bank holidays, I don't want to say anything that might jinx us, but ask me again if we reach the final," he said. According to BBC, the additional holiday would fall on Friday, July 24, the day following England's championship. The UK has eight standard public holidays each year, with extra days off typically declared only for major royal events such as Queen Elizabeth II's state funeral in 2022 and King Charles III's coronation ceremony in 2023.

An anti-corruption panel threatened legal action against an exam board after it failed to appear before parliament to explain widespread cheating involving 5,000 newly hired local government employees in southern Thailand.

Anti-Corruption Panel Threatens Legal Action Against Local Exam Board
7h ago Khaosod

At a parliamentary anti-corruption committee meeting on July 9, 2025, Chairman Asapoldh Sannitripath announced that Srinakharinwirot University was summoned to explain the exam procurement, question preparation, and grading procedures. The committee is investigating a widespread cheating scandal involving 5,000 of 15,000 newly hired local government employees. The board's chairman claimed to be unavailable and sent no representative, prompting Asapoldh to warn that mandatory legal action would follow if the board fails to appear at the next meeting.

Asapoldh emphasized the need to determine whether the 5,000 employees implicated in the fraud should remain on duty or be suspended pending final anti-corruption findings. He noted that this is the first major fraud case caught in the local government hiring process, despite investigations dating back to 2022. The committee will not interfere with ongoing investigations by other agencies but will monitor the case to ensure all wrongdoers face disciplinary action and criminal prosecution.

Asapoldh also raised questions about whether senior officials bear responsibility for the scandal and pledged to prevent future exam fraud through comprehensive system reviews. He confirmed that innocent candidates on the reserve list will be considered for promotion to fill positions vacated by those disqualified for cheating.

Bangkok Governor Chatchat Receives Certification, Ready To Work
7h ago Khaosod

On July 9, 2569, Chatchat Sittiphan traveled to the Election Commission office to formally receive his certificate of election as Bangkok Governor, following the commission's official endorsement on July 7. The Bangkok election director personally presented the certification document in a cordial atmosphere, with many Bangkok City Council members gathering for photos with Chatchat.

The Election Commission arranged for all 51 elected officials—including the governor and council members—to collect their certificates in batches from 9:00 a.m. onward on the second floor of the main building.

Chatchat expressed his pleasure at returning to public service and thanked the Election Commission for its swift and efficient work. He confirmed his readiness to begin immediately, noting numerous matters requiring urgent attention.

He outlined his 100-day strategic plan, which will transform approximately 261 projects into clear strategic initiatives with defined progress benchmarks. These initiatives span infrastructure, economic systems, and transparency.

On allegations raised during the campaign—including sexual harassment in government offices—Chatchat said he will monitor all matters comprehensively, including corruption in electrical tunnels, foreign labor issues, and waste management.

When asked about urgent priorities, Chatchat said much had occurred during his absence from office. He emphasized addressing issues causing public suffering: flooding and PM2.5 pollution. He also stressed transparency, resolving underground flooding in tunnels, and managing the Onnuch soft waste facility.

Regarding accusations about appointments and transfers involving bribery, Chatchat firmly denied any wrongdoing, reiterating his previous statements repeatedly.

Chatchat also discussed infrastructure problems in old city areas, particularly electrical construction causing disturbances and potential drainage issues from cutting old water lines. He ordered comprehensive data collection on buildings over 45-50 years old for inspection.

On working relationships with city council members, Chatchat stated cooperation would continue as before, respecting all elected representatives as chosen by the people. He emphasized collaborative work prioritizing public benefit in budget allocation.

Chatchat announced plans to convene city executives this afternoon.

Mass Transit Authority Investigates Water Leak in Purple Line Tunnel

MRTA confirms water seepage in Purple Line tunnel extension near Sai Yai poses no structural risk, with contractors working to stop the leak from a sump pit 30 meters underground.

Mass Transit Authority Investigates Water Leak in Purple Line Tunnel
7h ago Khaosod

The Mass Transit Organization of Thailand (MRTA) has inspected water seepage into an underground tunnel section of the Purple Line extension near the Sai Yai intersection, confirming no structural subsidence in the tunnel or adjacent buildings while maintaining continuous safety monitoring.

The water seepage incident occurred in a sump pit approximately 30 meters below ground level in the construction area of the Purple Line extension project (Lime Kiln to Rat Burana section, Kaen Kanachanaphisek Ring Road), Contract 4 (Phra Phuttha Bridge to Dao Kha Nong section) on July 8, 2025.

As of July 9, 2025, the MRTA clarified that water seepage is preliminary suspected to originate from the sump pit joint and poses no impact to tunnel structural integrity. The Contract 4 construction contractor is expediting ground improvement work to halt seepage while maintaining strict engineering control of water infiltration. The current water leakage volume is manageable, with no effects on road or building subsidence. The MRTA has instructed construction supervisors PMCSC2 and the Contract 4 contractor to continuously inspect and monitor the stability and safety of adjacent structures.

On the evening of July 8 at 11:00 PM, Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, Deputy Prime Minister Pipat Ratchakitprakarn, and Transport Minister's deputies, along with representatives from the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation and police, conducted on-site monitoring. The Prime Minister ordered the MRTA to enhance safety surveillance of adjacent buildings to assure public confidence and safety, with emergency response plans prepared.

Smoke-Free Schools Cut Teen E-Cigarette Use by 45%

Thailand's Health Promotion Foundation launched a forum equipping teachers and school administrators with tools to combat e-cigarette use among youth, with data showing smoke-free schools have reduced teen smoking rates from 40% to 10%.

Smoke-Free Schools Cut Teen E-Cigarette Use by 45%
7h ago Khaosod

E-cigarettes are now more accessible and sophisticated than ever for Thai children—a simple scroll through social media reveals colorful ads that can be ordered instantly, and daily life exposes youth to secondhand smoke and peers using these products. This escalating crisis prompted the Health Promotion Foundation (สสส.) to team up with the Teachers Network for Smoke-Free Schools and the Foundation for a Smoke-Free Thailand to organize a forum celebrating and sharing knowledge on "advancing smoke-free and e-cigarette-free schools for Thai youth." The event provided teachers and administrators with resources to elevate their schools into safe zones, and honored outstanding workers from across Thailand.

Professor Prakij Vathisathkij, chairman of the Foundation for a Smoke-Free Thailand, emphasized that teachers serve as the critical first line of defense protecting Thai youth from nicotine. With external environments saturated with smoking triggers, strong school safeguards are essential to prevent youth from becoming new smokers. However, the challenge has intensified—we can no longer distinguish between traditional and e-cigarettes, as both pose identical nicotine hazards. Tobacco companies continue developing new products like nicotine pouches targeting Thai children, demanding that educators stay vigilant.

"Though daunting, our collaboration with the Teachers Network has yielded encouraging results," Professor Prakij noted. "Teachers' influence can shift values and reduce smoking rates among peers dramatically—from 40% historically to just 10% today. This empirical evidence proves that teachers and school administrators are the vital mechanism protecting Thai children's futures from these addictive substances."

Critical statistics show e-cigarettes targeting young girls particularly. According to data from Thailand's National Statistics Office for 2025, released by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sanya Benjagul of Mahidol University's Faculty of Public Health, teenage girls are becoming primary victims of e-cigarettes. While traditional cigarette smoking among Thai women has dropped to just 1.3%, e-cigarette use among girls aged 13-15 soars to 15%—ten times higher than conventional smoking.

Tobacco companies deliberately design products to resemble small toys with pastel colors ("Toy Pods"), add sweet flavors, and promote through social media for easy youth access. Additionally, nicotine in e-cigarettes poses severe impacts on reproductive systems and pregnancy for young women in the future. These facts underscore why the Ministry of Education and partner networks must strengthen "smoke-free school" measures to intercept addiction at its source. Long-term research confirms that smoke-free schools serve as critical protective shields for Thai youth.

Three Dogs Rescued From E-Bike House Fire

Three Chihuahuas were rescued from a smoke-filled house after a fire, believed sparked by an electric motorcycle parked outside, spread to a car and damaged part of the home in Udon Thani on July 8.

UDON THANI — Three Chihuahuas were rescued from a smoke-filled house after a fire believed to have started from an electric motorcycle parked outside spread to a car and part of a home in Udon Thani on July 8, 2026, officials said.

The Emergency Call Center 199 received a report of a house fire in Ploy Villa housing estate in Nong Bua Subdistrict, Mueang Udon Thani District, at 4 p.m. Fire engines from Nong Bua Municipality and Udon Thani Municipality were dispatched to the scene.

Firefighters found flames engulfing an electric motorcycle parked in front of the single-storey house. The fire spread to a nearby car, and crews sprayed water to prevent the blaze from reaching the main structure. It took about 30 minutes to bring the fire under control.

The electric motorcycle was completely destroyed, while the car's front half sustained significant damage. An air-conditioner compressor and parts of the house were also damaged.

During the operation, residents informed firefighters that three dogs were still trapped inside. After the flames were extinguished and the smoke cleared, crews searched the interior and found the three Chihuahuas hiding in a bedroom. The dogs were carried out safely one by one, though visibly frightened and trembling.

The homeowner was away working in another province at the time, leaving no one inside the house. Neighbours reported hearing three loud bangs similar to firecrackers before seeing smoke and flames erupt from the property. They attempted to extinguish the fire with a garden hose while alerting emergency services.

A 67-year-old neighbour, identified as Em, rushed his family to safety after hearing the loud noises and spotting the flames. Another neighbour, Chakkrit, heard three to four loud bangs before seeing flames rise from the parked electric motorcycle.

Police investigators and forensic officers are scheduled to inspect the scene on July 9, 2026, to determine the exact cause of the fire and assess the extent of the damage.
