Pokemon Card Scam Bilks 20 Victims of 5 Million Baht

A Pokemon card scam has defrauded at least 20 people of over 5 million baht, with the suspect befriending victims through trading events before taking payment for cards that never arrived.

Pokemon Card Scam Bilks 20 Victims of 5 Million Baht

BANGKOK — A group of victims has filed a complaint with the Central Investigation Bureau's Economic Crime Suppression Division after allegedly being scammed through pre-orders and trades involving Pokemon cards and other collectible cards, with total losses exceeding 5 million baht.

Tankhun Jitt-itsara accompanied the victims to file a complaint with investigators at the Economic Crime Suppression Division.

One victim, identified as "A," a 15-year-old boy, said he first met the alleged suspect at a gaming and trading card event in Bangkok. The suspect initially befriended him before encouraging him to pre-order Pokemon trading cards. For about four months, A said, he had regularly ordered and received cards from the suspect and earned an average profit of around 10% by reselling them.

The transactions led him to trust the suspect and continue investing in card trading. He said the suspect appeared credible, was known among card sellers and buyers, and had connections with adults and others in the trading card community.

The victim said all communication took place through the suspect's personal Facebook account rather than a business page. Payments were made to a single bank account.

Problems arose when the latest orders failed to arrive. The suspect reportedly gave various explanations, including claims that the products were being held by immigration authorities or that shipments from overseas had been delayed.

A also said the suspect had borrowed about 10,000 baht from him. His total loss was around 140,000 baht.

The victims have since learned that about 20 people may have been affected in a similar manner, with combined losses exceeding 5 million baht. The suspect has reportedly closed both his personal Facebook and Instagram accounts and can no longer be contacted.

Another victim, identified as "L," 23, said he was already active in the trading card community and was introduced to the suspect through another victim. L said the suspect tried to become close to him and initially contacted him to offer Pokemon card trades. The suspect sent photographs of graded Pokemon cards — cards professionally assessed and certified for condition and quality — and offered them for sale or exchange at around 65,000 baht.

When the suspect's cards were worth more, L said he agreed to pay the difference. After repeated transactions, the two became close and L grew to trust the suspect. At one point, L wanted an Umbreon "Split Earth" card, which had a market price of around 500,000 baht.

The suspect allegedly offered to obtain the card for 410,000 baht, below the market price. L said he was eventually defrauded in the same manner as the other victims, suffering losses of around 640,000 baht.

Tankhun said he had brought all the victims to file complaints with Economic Crime Suppression Division investigators so legal proceedings could be pursued to the fullest extent. He added that the alleged suspect had also targeted other collectible cards.

Santhaya Kumleum chaired the first 2026 strategic city development working committee meeting at Pattaya City Hall on August 19, attended by Mayor Prameswar Gampichest, Deputy Mayor Krishana Bunsawad, strategic committee member Weerawat Yamchinda, and municipal advisors and staff. Santhaya stated that efficiently developing Pattaya into a world-class tourism destination with international-standard living conditions requires urgent preparation across all sectors, particularly in facilitating tourist access from airports through Pattaya, including transport from hotels to shopping and attractions, and preparing contingency plans for the proposed high-speed rail project connecting Suvarnabhumi, Don Mueang, and U-Tapao airports, which currently lacks a confirmed construction schedule.

Mayor Prameswar unveiled a development vision under a three-strategy, 33-policy framework targeting world-class tourism status with international living standards. Strategic committee member Weerawat proposed emphasizing low-carbon tourism, including sustainable transport, eco-friendly accommodation, local food, and community products, which reduces greenhouse gas emissions and environmental impact while creating economic opportunities—lowering business costs, enabling waste recycling, generating local income, and improving quality of life.

Weerawat added that the goal extends beyond reducing Pattaya's carbon emissions to ensuring the city thrives for its 100,000 registered residents and approximately 400,000 migrant workers, creating a destination tourists wish to revisit while enhancing residents' quality of life.

Rayong data centre site raid nets 18 illegal Chinese workersLegacyA raid at a data centre construction site in Ban Chang, Rayong, ended with 18 Chinese men arrested today, August 19, after officers found them working without permits. The operation was carried out by Rayong provincial police as part of a continuing crackdown on unlicensed foreign labour. Officers entered the large data centre project and found a group of Chinese men who appeared to be carrying out construction work. Photo via Siam Chon News When police identified themselves and asked to see identity documents and work permits, workers from both China and Myanmar ran off in different directions. Officers pursued the group and detained 18 Chinese men. Checks found that none had work permits, with police saying all 18 had been working at the site without the required documentation. Photo via Siam Chon News Police charged the 18 men with being foreign nationals working without a work permit under Section 8 of the Emergency Decree on the Management of Foreign Workers’ Employment, and sent them to investigators at Ban Chang Police Station for legal proceedings. Investigators added that the operation was part of a continuing effort to check foreign labour across the province, focusing on construction sites and businesses that employ foreign workers, in order to curb illegal employment. Photo via Siam Chon News Elsewhere, Bangkok police arrested five Chinese nationals for working illegally at a construction site in the Huai Khwang area. All five had entered Thailand legally on tourist visas, which does not allow them to work. During questioning, police learned that each worker was earning 450 yuan per day, or about 2,200 baht. The amount was significantly higher than Thailand’s minimum wage and the typical pay for legally employed construction workers. The story Rayong data centre site raid nets 18 illegal Chinese workers as seen on Thaiger News.

M6 Highway Bangkok-Nakhon Ratchasima Opens Free on Weekends

M6 Highway Bangkok-Nakhon Ratchasima Opens Free on Weekends
1h ago Khaosod

Deputy Prime Minister and Transport Minister Pipat Ratchakitprakarn has inspected the M6 motorway's Bang Pa-in–Nakhon Ratchasima section and held a meeting to prepare a trial opening of the Bang Pa-in–Pak Chong segment, approximately 110 kilometres long. The trial opening will be free for the public every weekend, starting August 21, 2569, at noon.

The 196-kilometre M6 motorway is critical infrastructure linking Bangkok and surrounding areas with the Northeast region. It provides an alternative route, reduces travel time and traffic volume on Phahon Yothin and Friendship roads, and supports reduced transport costs while promoting trade, investment, tourism, and logistics.

The Bang Pa-in–Pak Chong trial opening will run from Friday, August 21, at noon, continuously through to Sunday at midnight, with no toll charges. It will connect with the already-operating Pak Chong–Nakhon Ratchasima bypass section, allowing uninterrupted use of the M6 during holidays.

The Transport Ministry has emphasised principles of convenience and safety, particularly in the scenic Lam Takong area where heavy traffic is expected. Safety measures will prevent unsafe stops and parking. During the trial, only four-wheeled vehicles are permitted, with speed limited to 80 kilometres per hour, as some areas remain under construction. Highway police and staff will monitor the entire route. Vehicle parking or shoulder use without necessity is prohibited, and traffic signs must be obeyed.

The Department of Highways has prepared staff, assistance vehicles, and 24-hour emergency systems, coordinated with highway police, provincial police, rescue units, and authorities in Ayutthaya, Saraburi, and Nakhon Ratchasima provinces to manage traffic and handle emergencies. VMS signs will provide traffic information throughout.

Deputy Prime Minister Pipat stated that the Transport Ministry is accelerating remaining work to open the entire 196-kilometre Bang Pa-in–Nakhon Ratchasima M6 toll-free around the clock during the 2027 New Year festival, before proceeding to system testing and trial runs ahead of full commercial operation with toll collection.

As of July 2569, civil construction is 99.37% complete from 40 contracts, with 38 finished and 2 remaining, targeting completion by December 2569. Toll collection systems, traffic control and management systems, and safety systems under PPP arrangement are 92.32% complete, with aims to support full trial opening during the 2027 New Year period before full commercial operation and toll collection in April 2570.

Police Commission to Question MP Over Alleged Foreign Nominee Property Scheme
1h ago Khaosod

The Parliamentary Police Commission is preparing to summon the Department of Special Investigation to examine allegations that a Phuket opposition MP is connected to a financial network involving nominee companies. Watchrajpong Kuwichitsuwan, chairman of the Police Commission and a Samut Prakan MP from the Bhumjaithai Party, revealed that the DSI is preparing to question Somchai Tetchawarawarin, known as Lawyer Kaeng and a Phuket MP from the People's Party, following discovery of his involvement in financial flows through legal entities alleged to be nominees. The companies, in which he reportedly holds shares and serves as authorized director in over 30 firms, lack genuine business operations but focus on holding land and condominium units valued at more than 100 million baht jointly with foreign nationals. The Police Commission will summon the DSI director and relevant officials to verify whether these activities occurred, whether the case should be accepted as a special case, and whether legal violations or nominee arrangements for foreigners apply. Watchrajpong stated that the People's Party should investigate the matter seriously, just as it examines political opponents, and should not allow the suspect to face consequences alone without the party taking responsibility. He urged Somchai to come forward, clarify his position, and not remain silent, as silence suggests an attempt to conceal wrongdoing. Watchrajpong emphasized that if nominee behavior for foreigners is confirmed, it would set a poor example and suggest disregard for the law. He noted that government policy, led by Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and the Interior Minister, aims to crack down seriously on such schemes as they pose threats to national security and sovereignty, as well as social and economic stability.

AWC Opens Thailand's First Fairmont Hotel on Sukhumvit
1h ago Khaosod

Asset World Corporation (AWC) is advancing its luxury hotel and service expansion strategy with the debut of Fairmont Bangkok Sukhumvit, Thailand's first Fairmont-branded hotel, developed in partnership with Accor and Fairmont Hotels and Resorts. Positioned as a lifestyle destination and hub for meetings, incentive travel, conferences, and exhibitions (MICE) in central Sukhumvit, the property caters to international tourists, business travelers, and domestic clientele.

The new hotel opening is part of AWC's broader approach to developing and managing hotel and lifestyle assets by creating a destination that integrates hotel operations, food and beverage, wellness, and event management to maximize long-term revenue potential.

The Fairmont Bangkok Sukhumvit features 416 guest rooms and suites, which began welcoming guests from August 18, 2026, positioning itself as a new luxury hotel on Sukhumvit—one of Bangkok's key zones for tourism, commerce, and business. Beyond room revenue, AWC has structured the hotel to generate income from related businesses, with plans to open seven restaurants and gathering spaces throughout 2026, including a rooftop dining experience launching in December, driving business activity and spending beyond standard room rates.

The hotel emphasizes MICE as a revenue driver, offering over 2,000 square meters of event space across three floors accommodating international conferences, executive meetings, seminars, weddings, gala dinners, and various event formats. The Signature Grand Ballroom, featuring a 12-meter ceiling, along with breakout ballrooms and flexible meeting areas, enables the hotel to serve multiple market segments from domestic organizations to international clients.

Expanding MICE facilities diversifies the hotel's revenue base beyond room bookings to include conferences, food and beverage, banquets, and in-house activities—a key component of luxury urban hotel business models.

Beyond rooms and MICE, the hotel plans to open seven food and entertainment venues including Harper's, AELA Social Bar, CAYA Pool Club, and Wiggle Room, with additional experiences on floors 32-33 and rooftop areas launching late 2026. The property also includes a 1,000-square-meter Fairmont Spa and Fairmont Studio for yoga and fitness, plus family facilities, reflecting a lifestyle and wellness approach alongside hotel operations.

AWC's hotel development aims to create a comprehensive "destination" integrating hotel, dining, wellness, and events to build multiple revenue streams.

True Mobilizes Network Teams for Nan, Phayao Flood Response
1h ago Khaosod

True Corporation has mobilized its northern Thailand network teams to respond urgently to flooding in Nan and Phayao provinces following heavy, continuous rainfall that triggered flash flooding, particularly in Pua District of Nan Province. Water levels have risen rapidly, damaging homes and critical infrastructure. True is closely monitoring the situation and network status for both mobile and home internet services, and has established a northern command center at its Chiang Mai office to coordinate operations and deploy field teams with personnel, equipment, backup power systems, and mobile base station vehicles (COW units) from across northern Thailand to support Nan Province and maintain continuous communications for residents and emergency responders.

True is also working with the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation to send emergency alert messages via Cell Broadcast to residents in Pua District, warning of sudden floods, overflow, and landslides. The alerts urge people to move valuables to higher ground and relocate vulnerable groups such as elderly residents and bedridden patients to safe areas, and to seek assistance from local agencies if evacuation becomes necessary.

For network management, True has prioritized base stations in at-risk areas, especially critical cell sites serving hospitals, command centers, public assistance centers, and essential infrastructure. The company is closely monitoring power systems, transmission systems, area access, and base station status to assess risk and promptly repair any network damage. Teams have prepared mobile base stations, temporary base stations, generators, backup power systems, field equipment, and vehicles, and are ready to dispatch repair and signal-boosting teams once it is safe to access affected areas. True is coordinating closely with the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission, the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation, government agencies, local government organizations, rescue units, and other relevant agencies to support communications in disaster zones, evacuation shelters, and emergency response centers. The company is prioritizing the continuity of communications through both mobile networks and home internet during the crisis so residents can contact family, seek help, and receive government alerts, while also supporting coordination among rescue teams and government officials. Field teams will follow safety guidelines from government agencies and adapt to actual site conditions to ensure rapid and safe network recovery.

Thailand Launches Prime Minister's Youth Cup for Football and Volleyball
1h ago Khaosod

The government is moving forward with a major initiative to create opportunities for the nation's youth in football and volleyball through the Prime Minister's Youth Cup project, marking the first time in Thai sports history that two of the country's most popular sports are combined in a single youth competition of this scale. The Ministry of Tourism and Sports, the Thailand Sports Authority, the National Sports Development Fund, the Football Association of Thailand under Royal Patronage, and the Volleyball Association of Thailand jointly announced the Prime Minister's Youth Cup as a significant collaboration to promote youth sports competitions throughout the country. The project aims to develop quality base-level athletes nationwide through a competition system spanning district, provincial, regional, and national levels.

The competition was officially announced on August 19 at The Grand Forvins Hotel, with Tourism and Sports Minister Surasak Phancharoenworrakul presiding alongside other senior officials from the sports organisations. The project covers six age categories across two sports: boys' football U14, U16, and U18; girls' football U18; boys' volleyball U15; and girls' volleyball U15.

Boys' football competitions in the U14, U16, and U18 age groups will use a four-stage system starting with district-level qualifying (Stage 1), followed by provincial selection (Stage 2), then regional competition across 12 zones (Stage 3), and concluding with a national championship (Stage 4). This system also allows provincial all-star teams to participate, giving additional talented players the chance to compete at higher levels. Girls' football U18 will be held as a regional league competition across four zones, with representatives advancing to nationals. Volleyball competitions for both boys and girls U15 follow the same four-level structure from district through to national level. All six categories will be broadcast live on BG Sports during the Stage 4 national finals, with coverage of other key matches in earlier stages as well.
